"Beyond the Basics – Leadership and Leadership Development within Honors in Action" Dr. Melissa Fulgham, Leadership Development Representative on the Honors Program Council

Why? Let’s set some context by considering the purpose

Phi Theta Kappa's mission is two-fold: Recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and; Provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.

Honors in Action is designed to foster student success and help fulfill Phi Theta Kappa’s mission.  Honors in Action projects require substantive academic investigation of a theme related to the Society’s current Honors Study Topic.  The theme selected should be directly connected to and provide supporting evidence for the development of the action component of the project.  Honors in Action projects require taking on meaningful leadership roles and developing significant leadership skills to address a need in your community that was discovered through your research and analysis.

Rubric: THE EXERCISE OF LEADERSHIP AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT 10 points Without question, the chapter members and other project stakeholders were provided substantive opportunities to exercise and advance their leadership skills. There is strong evidence of effective planning and teamwork. The project included clear evidence of effective, intentional, and thoughtful educational and training activities and opportunities that improved the exercise of leadership in multiple areas required specifically for the success of the project. 7 points The chapter members and other project stakeholders were provided opportunities to exercise and advance their leadership skills. There is evidence of effective planning and teamwork. The project entry included evidence of intentional educational and training activities and opportunities that related to the exercise of leadership specifically required for the success of the project. 4 points Only the chapter members were provided with limited opportunities to exercise and advance their leadership skills. Not enough details were provided to indicate effective planning and teamwork. The project included only limited examples of educational and training activities or opportunities that related to the exercise of leadership

What? What is the difference between leadership roles and leadership development?

Leadership Roles vs. Leadership Development Leadership Development is intentional preparation to better lead the project. It is not learning by doing. Examples include:  Learning new skills  Instruction  Training  Coaching  Simulations  Practice Leadership Roles are the actions and responsibilities required throughout the project. For instance:  Planning  Organizing  Researching  Presenting  Promoting  budgeting

 Facilitate a meeting between campus and community groups to strategize how best to implement the Honors in Action project. Leadership Role Or Leadership Development?

 Coordinating with the facilities management to reserve rooms for implementation of the project. Leadership Role Or Leadership Development?

 Being the leader in a game of “Follow the Leader” Leadership Role Or Leadership Development?

 Participate in a training session with the reference librarian on how to conduct research Leadership Role Or Leadership Development?

 Take detailed notes of every meeting regarding the chapter’s planning and implementation of the Honors in Action project Leadership Role Or Leadership Development?

 Attend a day-long workshop on marketing, an area identified as a weakness, but critical for completion of the chapter’s Honors in Action project Leadership Role Or Leadership Development?

 Attending a regional leadership conference Leadership Role Or Leadership Development?

Thank you! Melissa Fulgham, Thanks to Monika Byrd and Susan Edwards and others for the pilfered bits of information included in this power point.
