Conducting An Interview Module 7 Level 2 Personal Safety and Emergency Preparedness

Materials Module 7 Level 2 Outline Handouts, as needed Pen or pencil Highlighters Post-its

Level 2: Personal Safety and Emergency Preparedness Goal The recruiter will know how to identify potentially unsafe and emergency situations and take precautions to ensure personal safety in the performance of his/her job.

Objectives Participants will be able to: Identify potentially unsafe and emergency situations that could occur on the job. Describe strategies for responding to unsafe conditions. Recommend actions for responding to potential emergencies. Level 2: Personal Safety and Emergency Preparedness

Agenda: Level 2 Unsafe Situation vs. Emergency Situation Unsafe Situation Emergency Situation Trouble-shooting Unsafe and Emergency Situations Recruiter Safety Review Assessment

Unsafe Situation vs. Emergency Situation As recruiters you run into a variety of situations in the field. Partner up with someone at your table and talk about how you would define the following two terms: An unsafe situation An emergency situation.

An unsafe situation – not safe, able or likely to cause harm, damage or loss. An emergency situation – an unexpected and usually dangerous situation that calls for immediate action. Unsafe Situation vs. Emergency Situation

An unsafe situation – not safe, able or likely to cause harm, damage or loss. Example: You stop by a family’s home for a scheduled interview. The father and several of his friends are sitting outside drinking. Unsafe Situation

Think about a time when you encountered an unsafe situation in your job as a recruiter. In your Outline, list the unsafe situations you heard from your tablemates and the way each of those situations was resolved.

Emergency Situation An emergency situation – an unexpected and usually dangerous situation that calls for immediate action. Example: You are driving to a rural location to visit a grower when a tornado warning is announced on the radio for your area.

Emergency Situation Recognizing Emergency Situations Determine the risk level of the potential emergency listed on your handout –None –Low –Medium –High

Trouble-shooting Unsafe and Emergency Situations Notice there are chart papers posted around the room. Form a group of three. Once your group is formed, choose one poster as your starting point and wait for further directions.

Trouble-shooting Unsafe and Emergency Situations As a group, read the situation card taped to the chart paper. You will have one minute to write one response to the question. Please write your answers on the chart paper.

Trouble-shooting Unsafe and Emergency Situations Trainer will signal when one minute is up. Move onto the next situation card, read what has already been written by your colleagues and write a different response. Continue the carousel until your group has visited all situation cards.

Trouble-shooting Unsafe and Emergency Situations How realistic were the situations described in the cards? Did your colleagues have some suggestions for resolving those situations that you had not thought of? Explain.

Trouble-shooting Unsafe and Emergency Situations Planning Preparation Awareness Common sense Can be a recruiter’s best defense.

Recruiter Safety Review In your Outline, read the group of statements and place a check by each statement that indicates a recruiter’s best practice to maintain his/her safety.

Please complete the assessment independently. When all participants are done, discuss answers with a partner; revise answers if needed. We will review as a whole group and you will grade your own. Level 2 Assessment

Turn to someone at your table and tell them the most important piece of information you learned today. Final Thoughts …
