The system is strait-jacketed and inhibits innovation. Ensuring equitable access to quality higher education for students coming from poor families is a major challenge.

Role of Regulatory Bodies in Improving Quality Education Regulatory bodies have to play the role of facilitators and not regulators. Maintenance of standards. Change in admission policy. Focus on autonomy: operational, financial and academic autonomy coupled with accountability.

Education should equip students with the generic skills rather than tailor them to meet the specific requirement of the industry.
