ANIMALS IN WITER ● Every animal has a way of surviving the winter. ● There are three ways:

HIBERNATION Hibernation is different from sleep. The animal hibernate all the winter and when spring starts the animal wake up slowly.

CARACTERISTICS OF HIBERNATION ● Its heart rate slows down. ● Its breathing slows down. ● Its body temperature drops. ● The animal takes a long time to wake up.

GROUNHOG ● In spring the groundhog comes out of his dens. ● The groundhog wake up every 10, 14 days to have a snack. ● In the USA groundhog day is a very popular tradition.

BEARS ● The bear is not a true hibernator because: ● They sleep and wake up and walk around. ● They can go to have a snack as the groundhog.

MIGRATION ● Animals migrate or travel to warmer places were they can find food, water and shelter. ● These animals move looking for warmth.

BIRDS ● Many birds migrate to where they can find food for the winter months. ● Birds have to eat a lot of food to store fat for they journey.

ADAPTATION ● Some animals will adapt to their surroundings by growing a thicker, warmer coat like the squirrels.
