COLLABORATIVE CULTURE School Based Leadership Teams… this team really, really matters PRINCIPAL and PS/RtI COACH: External General education teachers Special education teachers Literacy Coaches Student Achievement Coaches School Psychologists School Social Workers Technology Specialists Speech Language Pathologists Behavior Specialists Guidance Counselors FOCUS: Raise the bar and close the gap 2 THIS IS WHERE “IT”BEGINS TO HAPPEN… Not what to think but What to Think About Use of data not to get the answers but to Ask the Right Questions… Put the Problem, not the child, into context

Establishing a STRONG Leadership Team The principal plays a crucial role in establishing a leadership team. (S)He can’t be the Lone Ranger! The effectiveness of the team needs to be evaluated and adjusted as necessary – Defining effectiveness: Broad representation ( individuals who are respected, influential, hard working, and have content area knowledge/skill) Big picture thinkers who understand the connections of RtI/school improvement to initiatives 3

Why RtI School Based Leadership Team? Aligns and connects RtI to systems in the building Team members already know what is happening at the building (not to give up something that already works) Enhance sustainability over time (multiple people hear the same thing) We learn from each other!

Why RtI School Based Leadership Teams? 1.Research shows that schools with strong collaborative leadership are the most successful in supporting student achievement. 2.Experience tells us that those closest to the students are most capable of making the best, most meaningful educational decisions. National Institute for Urban School Improvement

Why RtI School Based Leadership Teams? 3.Shared leadership and decision making enables the school to increase its leadership capacity in order to manage change. 4.Broad involvement helps foster ownership; a commitment to the systems change on the part of the entire school community. National Institute for Urban School Improvement

Why RtI School Based Leadership Teams?,, 5.Organizing a small group makes it easier to move the process forward in an efficient fashion. 6.Team structures ensure effective communication in planning for improvement of school programs. 7.Team leadership helps to facilitate rapid and sustained change. National Institute for Urban School Improvement

Why have past initiatives failed? Failure to achieve CONSENSUS School culture is ignored Purpose unclear Lack of ongoing communication Unrealistic expectations of initial success Failure to measure and analyze progress Participants not involved in planning… 8

Sage-N-Scribe Activity Partner 1 (Sage) summarize the 7 reasons why school-based leadership teams are important (as cited on the previous slides) Partner 2 listen and record responses (Scribe). When partner 1 is done talking, partner 2 add to partner 1’s response.

School-based Leadership Team Identify team members (establish norms, roles, and purpose) Establish and/or monitor specific goals for school-wide initiatives while engaging in problem solving – Examine student reading achievement data. – Identify the gap between current levels and expected levels of student achievement. – Identify instructional, curricular, and environmental barriers to student achievement. – Design and implement instruction and interventions. – Evaluate the plan by examining data from assessments, observations, etc.

Resource Map Purpose: Organizes instructional materials, time, personnel, professional development, and assessments, and data analysis. Development: School-based Leadership Team creates a map at beginning of year Uses: Aligns resources with students’ needs and district guidelines identified in district’s school improvement plan

Example Template for a Resource Map Instructional Materials Amount of Instructional Time Personnel or Teams Professional Development Support Provided to Teachers Assessments Screening, Progress Monitoring, Diagnostic: Documentation of Data Meetings to Review Data Core (All students): Supplemental: Intervention: Technology:

Resource Map Activity On Post-it notes, identify school resources used to support literacy, math, science, and behavior instruction across the curriculum. Think of the resources related to instructional materials, personnel, professional development, assessments, data meetings (when, where and what will you examine) Place post-it notes on labeled charts around the room

Assessment Calendar Purpose: A schedule of assessments that will provide information to guide instruction as well as to measure student learning throughout the school year. Development: Created by School-based Leadership Team or content area teams Uses: To inform teachers how to plan/re-teach instruction as well as to measure student learning.
