Background  BS and MS from KSU  6 years, Atwood USD 318, earth science, physics & chemistry  1 year, McDonald USD 317, jr hi science, gen. science, physics & chemistry  25 years, Cheylin USD 103  6 years of middle school science (grades 6-8)

Background (Continued)  21 years physics  19 years math (Over the years this included 7th grade, 8th grade algebra, algebra 1, algebra II, trig and intro to calculus, applied math I & II, computer programming and computer applications.)  6 years, Colby USD 315, chemistry, physics, freshman science and ESL - 3years

Objectives Objectives for the afternoon  another lesson from modeling chemistry with a few modifications  sharing my experiences with modeling

The lesson: Relative Mass  Content objectives: counting by massing and relative masses as the basis of the periodic table.  Language objectives: accurately follow oral directions given in English to complete the lab; use appropriate science terms and complete English sentences to complete the conclusion to the lab; speak in English using appropriate science terms while completing the lab and during the post lab discussion.

5 - 7 Science Standards  conducts scientific investigations safely using appropriate tools and mathematics to gather, analyze & interpret data.  identifies relationship between evidence and logical conclusions.  communicates scientific procedures, results and explanations.  evaluates the work of others  …replicates historic experiments to understand principles of science…

8-12 Science Standards  correctly uses the appropriate tools and mathematics in scientific investigations.  actively engages in conducting an inquiry…  reports and defends the design, results and conclusions of the investigation.  2A.2.2 understands the periodic table ….  demonstrates an understanding of the history of science.

ESOL Standards  1. The student listens to spoken English to develop communicative competence in academic language use.  2. The student speaks in English in academically appropriate ways.  4. The student writes technical text in English to achieve academic success in the content areas.

Clarification of Terms  Direct relationship = Directly proportional  When one quantity (variable ) changes, the second quantity (variable) changes in the same way.  Quantities and measurements have two parts: a number (magnitude) and a label or unit.
