WEIGHT LOSS GRAPH

The graph above shows the average weight loss results from a medical weight loss procedure. A woman comes across this graph on the internet and tells her friend who weights 375 lbs and plans on receiving the medical weight loss treatment hat she should try to reach 400 lbs. She explains to her friend that according to the graph, the higher your starting weight, the more weight patients lose. Do you agree with her analysis? What are some of the risks of incorrectly analyzing a graph?

NOTES Scientists analyze data to help them understand what their data means. We use 5 steps to analyze data in tables and graphs.

THINK-PAIR-SHARE What is the purpose of taking time to analyze data in graphs and tables?

Step 1 Read the title

HOW DO DIFFERENT LIQUIDS AFFECT THE BREAKDOWN OF FRUIT SKIN? How much more skin was the hydrogen peroxide able to break down compared to the water? a)2 grams b)4 grams c)5 grams d)8 grams

THINK-PAIR-SHARE Why does analyzing data begin with reading the title?

Step 2 Circle and label the highest and lowest number and where they occur in relation to the independent variable

HOW DO DIFFERENT LIQUIDS AFFECT THE BREAKDOWN OF FRUIT SKIN? How much more skin was the hydrogen peroxide able to break down compared to the water? a)2 grams b)4 grams c)5 grams d)8 grams

Step 3 Identify and record any patters or trends (increases, decreases, etc.)

HOW DO DIFFERENT LIQUIDS AFFECT THE BREAKDOWN OF FRUIT SKIN? How much more skin was the hydrogen peroxide able to break down compared to the water? a)2 grams b)4 grams c)5 grams d)8 grams

Step 4 Estimate or calculate changes in data.

HOW DO DIFFERENT LIQUIDS AFFECT THE BREAKDOWN OF FRUIT SKIN? How much more skin was the hydrogen peroxide able to break down compared to the water? a)2 grams b)4 grams c)5 grams d)8 grams

Step 5 Answer any questions that go along with the data.

HOW DO DIFFERENT LIQUIDS AFFECT THE BREAKDOWN OF FRUIT SKIN? How much more skin was the hydrogen peroxide able to break down compared to the water? a)2 grams b)4 grams c)5 grams d)8 grams

THINK-PAIR-SHARE Why does completing the first 4 steps help you answer any questions about your graph?
