Accelerated Reader A guide for Parents & Guardians

What Is Accelerated Reader? Based on the principle, practice makes perfect, AR is a computerised learning system. It is designed to help motivate, monitor and manage student reading practice.

Our Year 7, 8 and 9 students have taken a computerised reading assessment known as STAR. The test uses multiple-choice questions that adjust depending on the Students responses. After completing the test their ZPD (reading range) is generated.

How Does AR Work? 1.A student selects an AR book within their ZPD (reading range). 2.The student reads the book. 3.The student takes an online quiz that assesses their literal comprehension of the book’s characters, events, and literary features. 4.The score, generated by the computer, gives the student immediate feedback. 5.Teacher monitors and intervenes

Practice at an appropriate level The reading range is the Student’s INDEPENDENT reading level. It is the range in which they read best when alone, without needing assistance. Books within their reading range will contain new vocabulary that will challenge them without being frustrating.

The content of a book is not taken into consideration when determining a book’s reading level. Just because a book is within the Student’s reading range it doesn’t mean they SHOULD read it. The Student is encouraged to evaluate a book to determine if the content of the book interests them (and/or is appropriate). By selecting a book that peaks their interest, they are more likely to be successful and comprehend more of what they are reading.

Accelerated Reader Motivates Students Each AR book is assigned points. Points are automatically awarded to your child’s record after each quiz. The Students will have the opportunity to become a “Muggle Millionaire, Siriously 100% and receive Vivos”. ALL students have target accuracy of 85%

“We are a reading school” The Telford Park School’s English Department will be giving one hour per week dedicated to Accelerated Reader. During this time the Teacher will have mini conferences with students to discuss their goals and progress. The Students will be supported with their reading, taking the online quizzes, checking for accuracy and in collaboration with the Library Manager ensure range and age appropriate level book are selected.

Why? Student B Reads 5 mins 282,000 words Student A Reads 20 mins 1,800,000 By the end of the academic year…Student A will have read the equivalent of 60 school days. Student B will have read the equivalent of 12 school days. Who will make the greatest progress?
