Youth Mental Health Services Current Issues & Future Possibilities Amex May 4th 2016 Dr Rick Fraser Clinical Director ChYPS
What we know 1 in 4 young people between will experience a mental disorder in any 12 month period years old is the peak period for the onset of mental disorders (75%) Pathways for young people to access health resources are limited as use of standard GPs is under-represented in this age group Negative impact on longer term vocational pathways and economic participation (Birchwood, Singh & McGorry, 2013)
‘The system is weakest where it should be strongest’ (McGorry 2007)
Current Health Service System for Young People
Confusing entry point
Confusing signposts
Exclusions
Lost in the system
Transition issues
The spectrum model of illness
Unclear care pathways
Late Intervention
We know what doesn’t work…

Future Directions
Future Short term – Build on current model – ensure sustainability – Collaborative – Making the most of resources – Evaluate – Sussex/Warwick Universities – Roll out to other venues in Sussex eg Coastal West Sussex & Eastbourne East Sussex
Future Longer term – Standalone youth services? – ‘Wrap around’ – Multiple agencies – Healthcare, social, educational, vocational, probation – Commissioned jointly
In Summary Clear need for better services for young people Collaborative approach No ‘one size fits all’ Agreement on local direction of travel Maintain the momentum!
