Youth Mental Health Services Current Issues & Future Possibilities Amex May 4th 2016 Dr Rick Fraser Clinical Director ChYPS

What we know 1 in 4 young people between will experience a mental disorder in any 12 month period years old is the peak period for the onset of mental disorders (75%) Pathways for young people to access health resources are limited as use of standard GPs is under-represented in this age group Negative impact on longer term vocational pathways and economic participation (Birchwood, Singh & McGorry, 2013)

‘The system is weakest where it should be strongest’ (McGorry 2007)

We know what doesn’t work…

Models of Youth Service Orygen – Australia Headspace – Australia Youthspace – Birmingham Headstrong – Ireland Norfolk Youth Service Sussex

Youth Service - what might this look like? Collaboration & collocation Acceptable, accessible, age appropriate Specialist staff supervising/enabling generic staff Clear entry point, pathways and exit Low level interventions available as well as specialist as needed Improve transitions and reduce drop-out/loss Better working with minority groups, offenders, NEETs, immigrants, LAC, LGBT

Sussex Update 2010 – youth strategy group 2011 – project grant from South Coast SHA 2012 – 2014 – ‘proof of principal’ evaluation of Pathfinder Service in Crawley 2015 – project grant from South Coast SCN to roll out to Brighton & Hastings 2016 – successful CCG bid for youth service in Hastings ‘How to set up a youth service’ manual

Current ‘Crawley Model’ Access and transition service ‘One stop shop’ Screening tools & risk assessment at initial presentation CAMHS, AMHS & EIS for mental health component Find it Out/YES (Targeted Youth Support Service) Other collaborators – YMCA, West Sussex CC, YP SMS, Crawley College, service users/carers Staff training/up-skilling/supervision EYE project

Future Directions

Future Short term – Build on current model – ensure sustainability – Collaborative – Making the most of resources – Evaluate – Sussex/Warwick Universities – Roll out to other venues in Sussex eg Coastal West Sussex & Eastbourne East Sussex

Future Longer term – Standalone youth services? – ‘Wrap around’ – Multiple agencies – Healthcare, social, educational, vocational, probation – Commissioned jointly

In Summary Clear need for better services for young people Collaborative approach No ‘one size fits all’ Agreement on local direction of travel Maintain the momentum!

Thank You
