Quad Axle Trailer +PPE +Remember +Permitting Requirements +Pre-Trip / Post Trip +Operation +Scaling

PPE In addition to your uniform (if provided), Ruan requires the following six items to be worn by all flatbed drivers anytime you are on duty and not driving: +Hard hat +Long pants +Safety vest or approved hi-visibility shirt +Safety-toe boots with internal metatarsal protection +Gloves +Safety glasses +Also - Any Customer Specific Additional Requirements – e.g. Hearing Protection

REMEMBER – Securement Guidelines – The Ruan Way +Minimum of two forms of securement per item +2 forms in front / 2 in back / 1 every 10 feet – regardless of bulkhead +Enough chains / straps to account for 100 percent of the load’s weight +If a securement device is missing the stamp or tag, it is OOS +Bungees are not cargo securement devices – only tarp tie downs +Ruan equipment load limits: 4 inch strap – inch strap – /8 chain – /16 chain- 4500

Permitting Requirements +Following Megasafe Rule 1: Prepare to Drive in terms of permits Ensure proper permits are in the permit book Understand the permit and the restrictions –These vary state by state Know the permitted route

Pre Trip / Post Trip Requirements +Pre Trip Perform standard pre-trip of equipment Additional requirements: –Tractor must have an extra yellow electric cord to operate additional axles –Use the switch in the cab to active the axles. Ensure axles will raise and lower freely Post Trip Perform normal post-trip of equipment Additional requirements: –Tractor must have an extra yellow electric cord to operate additional axles –Use the switch in the cab to active the axles. Ensure axles will raise and lower freely

Operation +When hooking up to quad, make sure to hook up the yellow cord (for quads only) +Quads have two axles that move up and down. These are known as “tag axles.” The yellow cord helps operate those tags with a switch that is located in the truck +When the switch is in the axle up position, there are only two of the four axles on the ground, which makes the trailer safe to maneuver +However, when scaling the trailer, make sure you put the “tag axles” down to get an accurate weight reading. This is done by flipping that switch to the down axle position Never travel in the yard with the tag axle down, unless you are lined up to scale

Operation +Below is what can happen if the tag axles are not raised while turning This can also occur during sharp curves and off ramps +Be aware of your surroundings and equipment to avoid these types of scenarios +Tag axles should be raised when trailer is empty

Scaling +Scale before leaving the yard – all axles need to be the same weight +Be sure the pressure in the axles is correct (60 PSI) +All four axles need to be on the ground before pulling into a state scale +Overweight fines on heavy haul are very expensive
