What are we going to learn today? To find out what the term ‘Redevelopment means’ To investigate the features of an Olympic park. Key Words: Infrastructure Run down Industrial Derelict Redevelopment

How did London 2012 redevelop Stratford. As part of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the organisers decided to build the Olympic park, including all the stadiums in the Stratford area of East London. This was a very ‘run down’ area that had many derelict buildings. They used the opportunity of the games to redevelop an industrial area. They also used the opportunity to build social housing. Look a the website below and try to figure out what the highlighted key words mean. Website Link Video

Key Words: Redevelop: To make an area of land new again. This can either mean destroying the old buildings, or making existing buildings look good again. Derelict: Something that is in a poor condition, or has been neglected. Run Down: A slang term with a similar meaning to derelict. Social Housing: Housing that is built to help people on low- incomes or who have certain needs (e.g. the elderly or vulnerable people) Industrial: An area that is used by factories, or transport businesses. Why would you want to re-develop an area? Can you think of any examples of re-development in Huddersfield? Why do you think that some people might not like redevelopment? Why would you want to re-develop an area? Can you think of any examples of re-development in Huddersfield? Why do you think that some people might not like redevelopment?

Infrastructure? The facilities, buildings and transport systems that we need to survive as a community of people. What do you think this means? Can anyone give me an example? Why do you think that some places have a better infrastructure than others? What kind of infrastructure do you think an Olympic Park needs?

Re-developing the Rio waterfront Watch the BBC News video about the regeneration of the Rio 2016 olympic site.BBC News video Who are the winners? Who are the losers? What key words did you notice in the video?

Watch the video and look through the website. Make notes on what kind of things are being planned for the olympic site. The Olympic Site Images Video

The Rio 2016 Site. The events at Rio 2016 will take place all over the city, including the historic Maracana football stadium. The Olympic Park will be built on the coast and re-develop land used by an old grand prix track. A British company won a competition to design the park. It will play host to 15 Olympic sports including swimming and hockey and a further 11 Paralympic competitions in 34 venues on the site, 18 of which are already operating. It will also house a media centre to accommodate 20,000 journalists and the Olympic and Paralympic villages are also located in the Barra zone. It will be triangular in design.

What do you think an Olympic park needs? Olympic Park

Creating our own Olympic Park. You are going to create your own Olympic park bid for Rio At the end of the lesson, you must present your ideas to the rest of the class. Think about the following things: – What do you need in your park? – How are people going to get there? – What sports stadiums do you need? – What infrastructure? – Could you include any sculptures or art work? – How will it look? What you could create: A map of the area A logo for your games A justification for your bid. A speech?
