Trusted Learning Environment Partners With support from lead partners… Additional partners…

What is the Trusted Learning Environment (TLE) Seal? The TLE Seal is a mark of distinction for school systems, signaling they have taken measurable steps to assure the digital privacy of student data. By school system leaders…For school system leaders.

Who is eligible to earn the Seal? School systems of all governance structures; public, private, charter and parochial. Individual schools within a larger system are not eligible.

There are 5 Main Practice Areas Leadership Business Data Security Classroom Professional Development

What Exactly Does Each Practice Entail? Leadership: manage and collaborate with stakeholders regarding the use and governance of student data to inform instruction Classroom: implement educational procedures and processes to ensure transparency while advancing curricular goals Data Security: perform regular audits of data privacy and security practices and publicly detail these measures

What Exactly Does Each Practice Entail? Business: establish acquisition vetting processes and contracts that, at minimum, address applicable compliance laws while supporting innovation Professional Development: require school staff to conduct privacy and security training, and offer the instruction to all stakeholders

How Does a School System Earn the Seal? Complete application Sent to panel of CTO peers and privacy experts for review Applicants notified If granted, TLE Seal is valid for 2 years

What Does Earning the TLE Seal Mean for Our School System? The program requires school systems to have implemented student data privacy protections that meet a set of high standards around 5 core practice areas. School systems that demonstrate that they have met the Program requirements will be able to display the TLE Seal, signifying their commitment to student data privacy.

Why is the TLE Seal Program Important? Technology is a critical part of the 21 st century classroom, and data is vital to efforts to provide a more personalized education for all students. Research shows that a large majority of parents are concerned about the privacy and security of student data. Schools must have concrete policies and practices in place to provide appropriate protections for student data, and they need to communicate those practices clearly to parents in order to earn their trust. The TLE Seal Program indicates that school systems have demonstrated adherence to a set of publicly available standards focused on the protection of student data privacy.

Does Earning the TLE Seal Ensure Compliance? Compliance with applicable federal and/or state privacy laws should be considered a minimum standard and compliance is the responsibility of schools and service providers. School systems applying for the TLE Seal are expected to be in and maintain compliance with applicable laws. The TLE Seal considers practices that may not be required by law, but that are important to protect student data.
