Presentation to METRO, 10/29/12 Views of Bronx Park : Collaborative Project to Digitize the Postcards of the Bronx Zoo and The New York Botanical Garden

The Project:  First public digitization project undertaken by the WCS Archives  Collaboration between NYBG and WCS a natural fit  Postcards are illustrative of both institutions’ histories  METRO grant funding allowed WCS Archives to acquire equipment and CONTENTdm access for future projects

Views of Bronx Park: Collaborative Project to Digitize the Postcards of the Bronx Zoo and The New York Botanical Garden The Process :  WCS Archives purchased equipment, including laptop and flatbed scanner  WCS Archivist hired paid intern to do scanning, assign metadata, and assist in website development  NYBG Archives provided guidance with CONTENTdm  NYBG Archives provided over 130 postcards for digitization, WCS provided over 300 postcards for digitization  Scanning and metadata completed in May  Website development completed in June  Website went live in July

Views of Bronx Park: Collaborative Project to Digitize the Postcards of the Bronx Zoo and The New York Botanical Garden Project Workflow: Description and Digitization  Scanning and photo processing  Front and back of each card scanned using Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner  TIFF masters: 600ppi, sRGB IEC color space  JPEG derivatives: 2000px, batch processed  CONTENTdm ingest  Batch added JPEGs as compound objects to client, using a template  Added metadata specific to each card, following metadata guidelines
