MONASH LIBRARY 3 What is an infographic? Source: Taguchi, K. & Ackerman, L. (2014). The Infographic: Is there a Place in Higher Education?. In T. Bastiaens (Ed.), Proceedings of E-Learn: World Conference on E-Learning in Corporate, Government, Healthcare, and Higher Education 2014 (pp ). MONASH LIBRARY 16 Design Tips  Have a clear story/purpose  Think about tone (casual/formal)  Utilise icons, charts and images – don’t overdo the text  Don’t overdo colour (stick to around 3 colours, but use different shades)  Consider use of fonts (be relatively consistent, use bold and italics)  Think about printability or interactivity – i.e. make the length equal to one page. Will it work in black and white? Do you want it to hyperlink?  Use white space effectively!  Limit the information you put in and create clear sections  Take a break and then look at it again to see any mistakes/improvements needed

MONASH LIBRARY 17 Infographic tools For a list of 20 great infographic platforms see:

MONASH LIBRARY 18 Piktochart Some functionalities:  Mobile app just released  Has limited selection of free templates  Monthly subscription (US$29) – removes watermark, added functionality (e.g. PDF download)  Can embed videos and insert hyperlinks  Resizable canvas as you go  Great choice of icons and images, which are searchable  Charts are available and you can edit the data (or import from excel)  Can embed finished product on the web, share on social media, or download as image  Automatically saves as you go and stored in the cloud – access anywhere

MONASH LIBRARY 19

MONASH LIBRARY 20 Canva Some functionalities:  Has mobile app with all functionalities  Cannot resize length of infographic, but can choose custom dimensions at beginning  Great variety of templates and formats  Large image library, more realistic images than Piktochart  No monthly subscription, have to pay for images individually (but can upload images)  Can crop/edit images you’ve uploaded  Charts available – cannot edit data input  Can download PDF, JPG or PNG and share on social media  Can hyperlink images and text  Automatically saves as you go and stored in the cloud – access anywhere

MONASH LIBRARY 22 Conclusion  What comes next?  Check out the Monash Law Library’s conference poster ‘Practice Makes Perfect: Building Statutory Research Skills for Students’ for an example of how we’ve used Piktochart (Thursday 10:30-10:50)  Any questions?  My contact details: – –
