Youth Risk Behavior Survey Administered during the spring of 2010 to Cohasset students in grades 7-12 Report compiled by Michael Gill, Ed.D. Assistant Principal, Cohasset Middle-High School & Health and Wellness Curriculum Specialist Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drugs Cohasset Middle-High School Youth Risk Behavior Survey Spring 2010

Responded “Yes” to: “Have you ever tried cigarette smoking, even one or two puffs?”

Responded “yes” to: “Have you smoked during the past 30 days?”

Of the 31 high school students who reported that they had smoked during the past month, 52% (16) of them reported they had smoked on one or two days. Of the 3 middle school students who reported that they had smoked during the past month, 2 of them reported they had smoked on one or two days. You will see in the next slide that Cohasset students (in 2010) appear to smoke tobacco less frequently than young people around the State of Mass. And the U.S.

Tobacco (High School survey) Smoked cigarettes in past 30 days U.S = 25% reported regular cigarette smoking U.S = 34.8% U.S = 36.4% U.S.1999 = 34.8% U.S.2001 = 34% U.S.2009 = 20% Mass = 30.2% Mass = 35.7% Mass = 34.4% Mass.1999 = 30% Mass.2001 = 26% Mass.2007 = 18% Cohasset 1996 = 29.9% (9.6% of whom answered 1 or 2 days) Cohasset 1998 = 36.3% (73/201) (23 % of whom answered 1 or 2 days) Cohasset 2000 = 28% (61/217) (8% of whom answered 1 or 2 days) Grade 12 students did not participate in the survey Cohasset 2002 = 26% (75/286) (39% of whom responded 1 or 2 days) Cohasset 2010 = 10% (31/312) (52% of whom responded 1 or 2 days)

Smoked Tobacco during the past 30 days. (Middle School survey) % (35/178) of Cohasset Middle School students reported smoking at least one cigarette in the past month % (11/176) of Cohasset Middle School students reported smoking at least one cigarette in the past month % (5/222) of Cohasset Middle School students reported smoking at least one cigarette in the past month % (3/178) of Cohasset Middle School students reported smoking at least one cigarette in the past month.
