Thornhill School News Issue 21 News from Miss Clark News from Mrs Colley SCHOOLSCHOOL This WeekNext Week News from Mrs Figes Attendance- week beginning 18 th February: 94.6% One late in Keys Stage One- well done Key Stage Two! Let’s talk……. What is strength? Can a small person be strong?. Fri 1 st March 2013 Brownies If your child is interested in joining Brownies please contact Rachel on Mon- Sports Club Tues- KS2 gymnastics Wed-. ‘Sing Up’ Thurs-Lego club/ Recorder club Fri- KS2 Football match Youth Club ( £1) Mon- Sports Club Tues- KS2 gymnastics Wed- Dance Thurs- Lego club/Recorder club Fri- KS2 Football match All clubs as normal We began the week with maths revision sessions on the four calculations: addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. It was very encouraging to see how much the children have learnt and how well they could apply their knowledge. In Science we continue our Forces topic and have been studying circuits and magnets. The children have had fun building their own circuits. Design and Technology has been linked to our topic on Ancient Greece with the children designing and making Greek shields and theatre masks. For RE the children have been looking at holy books and in particular the Bible. Next Thursday is World Book Day- Please can your child dress up as a character from a book- thank you! Key Stage Two have been battling through the dreaded lurgy to work very hard this week. We have had our Sing Up festival which was fun and up-lifting – thank you for your co-operation with this event. In our topic work we have looked a love poetry and also the story of Peseus and the Gorgon’s head: writing our own narratives of the story. Year 5 and 6 have a story to write for homework this week- get them to read their completed stories to you! This week we have continued our work on castles. In PE we are learning how to dance to some medieval music. Lords and ladies danced like this when they went to feasts and banquets in the great hall of a castle. In literacy we have written some good quality sentence captions to go with pictures of parts of a castle. Some of our best words were – protected, narrow, sharp, pointed, enemy, solid and strong.

Multi-cultural week – 4 th -8 th March We will be having a special week of activities for multi-cultural week. All the pupils will be engaged with online maths, science and english activities, competing against pupils from around the world. Monday- Special art morning for all pupils Tuesday- World Literacy Day! Wednesday- World Maths Day ! Thursday- World Book Day- please send your child to school dressed as a character from a children’s book. We will be having two ‘listen to a story’ sessions through the day, when the children can choose which story to listen to, being read by a member of staff. Fri – Food tasting morning – you are welcome to come and join the pupils in the hall as they taste foods from around the world prepared by members of staff. - Multi-cultural activity afternoon- Children will be able to choose two activities from a range of crafts, sports and games from around the world. We hope that multi-cultural week will encourage the children to embrace being part of an international community. To enjoy exploring the differences between cultures and to recognise similarities and commonality between communities too. Nursery If anyone has a hostess trolley that they don’t want the nursery would be pleased to have it. Also our Carer/Toddler group are looking for feeding booster seats that you strap onto a chair. If anyone has one that they don’t want please let Deanna Magill in the nursery know. Sing Up Thank you to the ten children who represented our school at the Sing Up festival on Wednesday and to the families who came to support the event. It was a wonderfully fun evening and our children were a shining beacon for us: marvellous behaviour and grasping the opportunity to mix with pupils from other schools. I could not be prouder of you: Evie Kirkbride, Paige McVeigh, Keisha and Shakira Pettigrew, Nathan Reay, Maciej Jedrzejczyk, Aimee Morfoot, Maddison Hewer, Ellie Murray and Courtney Dougan. KS1 Gymnastics Competition Well done to our KS1 gymnasts who came first in the competition on Monday. They will now go through to the final on 14 th March at St Benedict’s School. Well done to you all, the hard work has paid off!!
