Food cultures vary in different parts of the world. So are the table manners. These two days I’ve learned about Chinese and British table manners and I’d like to introduce them to you.

Both being countries with long history of civilization, they have something in common with each other. For example, in these two countries, you need to wait for the host to arrange your seats. And being thrifty is a virtue in both countries, so it’s not suggested to leave much food uneaten.

Being very far from each other, they, however, vary in many ways. To start with, it’s considered rude to be late in Britain, while Chinese tend to be a little late. Secondly, it is the host that starts a banquet but in China, it is the main guest. Besides, it’s welcomed to ask for more and refuse food in China, but that’s not the case in Britain. What’s more, tableware in China is placed on the table but it is always on the plate. On top of that, British people seem to care about table manners a little bit more than Chinese people.

In short, manners make a man, which is believed in both countries. So let’s try to follow it and eat to live, not live to eat. Thank you!
