Domestication of Animals Dogs are believed to be the first animals domesticated. The dog has been domesticated about 12,000-15,000 years ago. The gray wolf ( Canis lupus ) is thought by most scientists to have given rise to the domestic dog

Domestication of Animals Some scientists have posited that dogs may actually be descended from an extinct wild ancestor due to a number of morphological differences between dogs and wolves likely resembled contemporary pariah dogs and dingoes The dogs were probably first domesticated from wolves somewhere in the Middle East

Domestication of Animals

wolves began to scavenge around human settlements people adopted pups to serve as guards and hunting companions The human-raised wolves adapted well to human societyhumans started to control the breeding of these wolves

Domestication of Animals Livestock were the next species to be domesticated Domestic sheep and goats back to 7,000 B. C. E. The first animals known to have been domesticated as a source of food are sheep in the Middle East Goats follow soon after The proof is the high proportion of bones of sheep in northern Iraq

Domestication of Animals Domestic cattle ( Bos taurus ) appear in 6,000 years ago in Egypt and Mesopotamia. They provided a multitude of uses, including labor, milk, meat, bone, and tallow (for burning).

Domestication of Animals

The ancestors of the domestic pig are found among the wild pigs of the species Sus scrofa. Pigs were domesticated around the same time as cattle. The domestic pig is believed to have originated in several different regions. – Chinese breeds originated in east Asia – European breeds originated in south-west Asia

Domestication of Animals The first reason for herding sheep and goats, or keeping cattle and pigs in the village =>> to secure a regular supply of fresh meat If more animals are killed than can be immediately consumed =>> meals from the surplus will be increasingly unpleasant These animals also provide for almost every other need While they are alive =>> produce dung to manure the crops When they are dead – leather and wool for garments – horn and bone for sharp points, of needles or arrows – fat for tallow candles – hooves for glue

Domestication of Animals Cats The African wildcat ( Felis silvestris lybica ) is considered the ancestor of all domestic cats It is not known when cats are first domesticated some evidence pointing to at least some level of domestication as early as 9,500 years ago in Cyprus one archaeological expedition in China found cat bones dating to 5,300 years ago

Domestication of Animals The ancient Egyptians kept cats as pets 4,000 years ago Pictures of cats have been found in the Egyptian tombs. In the temples of Egypt cats are sacred animals and are mummified in their millions

Domestication of Animals Cats ( Felis silvestris ) helped rid rats and mice from stored grains once agriculture became widespread.

Domestication of Animals Horse Archaeological evidence for the domestication of the horse has been found in the Ukraine dating to 4,000 BC They were used for riding and as a source of meat Other possible areas of horse domestication have been suggested and include China, Mesopotamia, Turkestan and the region north of the Persian mountains.

Domestication of Animals Poultry The red jungle fowl ( Gallus gallus) a member of the pheasant family, lives in the forests and bamboo jungles of India and southeast Asia. Jungle fowl of this kind are captured and kept for their eggs and their flesh by about 2000 BC in Asia. It is thought that all domestic poultry in the world today are descended from this one species.

Domestication of Animals Rabbits: Domesticated rabbits are descended from the wild rabbit ( Oryctolagus cuniculus ) of Southern Europe and possibly North Africa. Wild rabbit was discovered in Spain in 1,000 BC In the sixteenth century several breeds were known. China and Italy are the main producers of rabbit meat » farming of the rabbits is increasing in many countries because of its high production capacity
