Frida Kahlo Self-Portraits

Frida Kahlo was born in Mexico in Her father was an artist, and he taught Frida how to paint when she was a little girl. When she was seven years old, she was stricken with polio and had to stay in bed for nine months! ***Polio was a dreaded childhood disease that affects the nervous system (since ancient times). Its biggest outbreak occurred in the first half of the 1900s before Jonas Salk’s vaccination became widely available in ( That is when Frida taught herself how to draw. Drawing saved her from being sad.

The Accident, 17 September 1926 When Frida was only 18 years old, she was in a terrible bus accident that left her in constant pain for the rest of her life. Her spine, pelvis, and foot were broken.

After the accident, Frida found the courage to live by painting. She painted the things that were important to her, such as special days, dreams, and the world of her imagination. When she was in pain and could not leave her bed, she painted in bed.

Frida painted a lot of pictures of herself. Sometimes, Frida would put her favorite pet monkey or dog in her paintings!
