What is Debian and Etch? ● Debian is a huge open-source project ● Debian GNU/Linux is a major non- commercial volunteer-driven distribution ● Started by Ian Murdock in 1993 ● Etch is the code name of Debian GNU/Linux 4.0, which was released on Apr 8 th 2007

The Universal Operating System ● Supports 11 hardware architectures: – i386, amd64, sparc, alpha, powerpc, ia64, arm, mips/mipsel, s390, hppa ● More than 100 derivative distributions – Knoppix, Ubuntu, Freespire, Progeny, Storm, MEPIS, Xandros, Libranet, Sunwah RAYS,... ● Over 18,200 binary packages ● Other kernel flavors being developed – Debian GNU/Hurd, Debian GNU/NetBSD, Debian GNU/kFreeBSD
