THE BEGINNING. The Reformation

Bell Work I imagine we should create some sort of vague questioning about martin luther or protestantism.

Who’s Martin Luther??? Dude that had a problem with the Catholic Church. He thought they were doing messed up stuff!!!

Martin Luther thought the following: The church competed for political power. The church plotted against kings/queens that tried seizing their land. The church expanded for their own interests. The church sold indulgences to the people. one of these is more important than the others.

What are indulgences??? They lessened the amount of time a soul spent in purgatory. Purgatory is a place where souls not “pure enough for heaven” atoned for their sins. So, indulgences= free passes to pass the time of purgatory.

What made Martin Luther angry?? He was upset that the Catholic Church started selling indulgences. So, how do you feel about the Catholic Church selling passes to people in order to lessen their time to get into heaven??? Moral or Immoral? Why?

Churches Claim The Catholic church said the fees from indulgences allowed them to beautify their structures. Also allowed the church to pay for more staff among the church officials. Would that make you upset if you were a Christian?

Martin talks to Tetzel Martin Luther (a German monk) was a professor of theology. He met a priest named Johann Tetzel, who happened to be selling indulgences.  People were even paying for indulgences for dead family members. So, ML wrote the “95 Theses”

95 Theses ML was tired of the Catholic church shenanigans, so he wrote a list of 95 complaints against the Catholic Church. He argued that the pope couldn’t save souls, that people can only get to heaven by their own faith.

ML trolls the Church After a list of 95 complaints, Martin Luther pinned the document on the doors of the local church.

Posting of the Theses (complaints)

After the posting: Martin Luther’s actions garnered attention, which was good and bad. Mostly bad. He mic-dropped against the Catholic Church, creating another split in Christianity– Protestantism exists, along with Lutheranism. Lutheranism is the oldest form of Protestantism.

Your Assignment! Channel your inner-Martin Luther and write a list of complaints against Moore HS. In this list, they should be:  Appropriate to be read aloud.  At least 15 complaints with reasons backing why they’re worthy  State how your issues with the schools should be changed.  If finished, toward the end of class, volunteers will be allowed to share their complaints.
