Chapter 6 Review Answer Key

Representative Government is the government structure that the head of the government was chosen by the British Government to be their representative in the colony.

The Roman Catholic Church leader in Newfoundland that support government reform during mid- 1800s is Bishop Michael Anthony Fleming.

Legislative Assembly is the government body that aimed to suggest bills that were meant to help all colonists and to raise money through taxes

William Lyon Mackenzie led the rebellion in Upper Canada in Responsible government is the government structure that the elected members would have the most say in decisions.

Conservatives, as known as Tories, are groups represent the people who wanted things to stay the same. The political group that fought for the political reform in 1830s’ Lower Canada is Parti Patriote.

The leader of the Reformers in Lower Canada is Joseph Papineau. Militia is a group of citizens who are not professional soldiers but act as soldiers in times of trouble.

Reformers, as known as Liberals, are groups represent the people who wanted change. The Governor and Lieutenant Governor are chosen by the British Government (King/Queen).

List the 3 prerequisites to become a voter in the British North America during mid-1800s. Males over 21 were British citizens

How those prerequisites and the property qualifications limited the political participation of black colonists during mid-1800s? Land owners, or those who pay a certain amount for rent a year (many could not vote because they traveled for work and didn’t have a year round house) First Nations were not allowed to vote because they weren’t British citizens Black colonists were allowed to vote but most were not wealthy enough to meet the property qualifications

Who were the people chosen to be on the Legislative and Executive Councils during Representative government? In Upper Canada the British elite that in Church of England were chosen In Newfoundland the merchants (who controlled the fishing industry) were chosen In Lower Canada the councils were chosen from the French elite These men were picked because they were the most loyal to Britain and would make decisions that were best for Britain

Churches in mid-1800s: Two main churches were: Church of England (Anglican) Roman Catholic Church Most churches opposed the political reforms Roman Catholic Church in Newfoundland is the exception of this phenomenon

What was problematic with to the editor and editorials in newspapers at this time? The opinions expressed in newspapers were often the opinions of the owner and did not always contain correct information Letters to the editor and editorials were often very biased

What were the 3 issues in Upper Canada and the two issues in Lower Canada that led the Reformers to rebel ? Issues in Lower Canada Farmers were worried that the new settlers would take all the land, leaving none for their children French Canadians were worried about losing their language and Culture because of British control There had been poor harvests and, many people faced starvation. They felt the government was not going enough to help them

Issues in Upper Canada Reformers did not agree with how government money was being spent The elite got the best areas of land while new immigrants had to go far away from towns to find land

What were Lord Durham's suggestion to the British government after he investigated the situations in Upper and Lower Canada ? Join the colonies of Upper and Lower Canada into one colony called the Province of Canada Give the province of Canada responsible government

Which of Lord Durham's suggestions were followed ? The British government created the Province of Canada The suggestion of rewarding responsible government to the Province of Canada did not followed until 1847.
