Passover, a meal to remember Learning objective: Why do the Jewish people remember Passover as a festival? I can explain how a Jewish family celebrates Passover I can explain the symbolism of each part of the Seder Meal I can explain why Jews remember the events of Passover

What is so special about sharing a meal? Task: We are going to celebrate the Passover meal by exploring the Seder plate and retelling Jewish history through our actions and words. Label the Seder plate and make notes about each item. Explain the symbols of the Seder meal for the Jewish community.

Video 2: Passover Jewish young people describe the celebration of Pesach and what it means, for Jews in the past and for Jews today. Video 3: Passover story Preparations for the Passover Seder table. Jewish Passover traditions are described and the story of the Jews enslavement in Egypt Video 4: The four Questions The clip shows a Jewish family celebrating passover and they discuss the four questions asked. The Passover * Video clips to watch if you and your class are not re-enacting the Passover meal. Video 1: The Seder meal A Jewish family are having the seder meal. Part 1: Part 2: Part 3:

A bowl of salt water – This is not drunk by swerves as a reminder of the tears the Jews cried in Egypt. Bitter herbs (usually horseradish) – reminds Jews of how unhappy they were in Egypt. Bitter Herbs video: The Matzot (crackers or unleaven bread) Made as they fled Egypt and did not have time for the bread to rise. The Charoset (a mixture of apples, nuts and wine) – It is a paste that reminds them of the slaves who built with mortar and of the happiness of escape. The Green vegetable (usually parsley or lettuce) A reminder of the way God cared for them in the desert. Given them water and honey. A Lamb bone – This is not eaten but reminds Jews of the lambs killed in Egypt and their blood shed on the doorposts to save their firstborns. The hard-boilled Egg – Roasted in a flame reminding Jews of the animals killed as an offering to God. The Wine (a glass for everyone) – Drunk four times because God promised four times that he would bring the Jews out of Egypt.

Reflection task: Q: What is so important about the Passover to Rabbi Jonathan Sacks? Why is it worth learning about? Q: What did freedom mean to the Jews and how did it come about? Q: Why is this night different from all other nights? The message of Passover remains as powerful as ever. Freedom is won not on the battlefield but in the classroom and the home. Teach your children the history of freedom if you want them never to lose it. Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks
