Mission The Saint Francis Student Wellness Center’s Mission is to improve young people’s access to health services by providing comprehensive, low cost, convenient mental and physical health care which will result in a healthier student.
Goals 1996 Improve student health status - - physical, psychological, social and educational – of Grand Island Senior High School students. Establish community involvement at all levels for the purpose of planning, financing, implementation, evaluation, replication and dissemination of a system for assuring access to basic primary health care services for ALL Grand Island Senior High Students. Define and make accessible a basic level of primary care for ALL Grand Island Senior High Students to include preventive screening, immunization monitoring and emergency care. Bring diverse sources of alternative funding to support the issues of access to primary health services for Grand Island Senior High Students. Support the public school’s mission of educating All students, reduce school drop outs, and improve academic achievements creating a healthy and safe school environment. Develop an effective school based health center evaluation and replication plan. Develop asset building activities for students and parents to include an abstinence based teen pregnancy project in the middle school and senior high.

Mental Health Services Students present with problems such as poor grades or attendance, family conflict, relationship issues, or feelings of sadness, anxiety or low motivation. Students learn how to appropriately express their feelings, communicate more effectively, set goals, and develop coping skills.
Mental Health Services The most common diagnoses are: *Major Depressive Disorder *Adjustment Disorder Changes in the past 10 years include an increase in the Bipolar Disorder diagnosis, self-mutilation, male anorexia, and services provided to special education students.
Substance Abuse Services The most common diagnoses: Alcohol Abuse Cannabis Abuse Ecstasy Abuse Methamphetamine Abuse is seen, however, onset is typically late adolescence/early adulthood. Meth prevention is done at this level.
Substance Abuse Services Changes in the past ten years include: Somewhat of a shift from primary Alcohol Abuse diagnosis to primary Cannabis Abuse diagnosis. More students are abusing both alcohol and cannabis. In addition, there is some Dex and Meth use.
Medical Services Students are seen for sports and school physical exams, including immunizations and screening for tuberculosis. Students continue to receive care for URI, sinus infection, Strep throat, bronchitis, Urinary tract infections, Mono, and other minor illness. Referrals as needed
Medical Services Changes in the last 10 years: Increasing immunization requirements, such as Menactra and HPV. Increase awareness and planning for mass outbreaks such as bioterrorism and the recent Mumps/H1N1 (Swine Flu) outbreak. Greater collaboration with middle schools.
Other Activities Certified Nursing Assistant Class in collaboration with CCC. Teen Parenting Group in collaboration with Maternal/Child Department at SFMC, & GISH Diabetes Education and Support Group Classroom and Community Presentations Parent and Community Advisory Board Student Advisory Board Projects
