A relatively new unified country – following victory in Franco- Prussian war in 1871 principalities like Prussia & Bavaria were united into single German country Militarily strong – The German army was seen as powerful and very important to society. Independent. Recent Industrial expansion – rivalling GB in production of coal, steel & iron and a leading industrial nation Colonial- a growing empire stretching across Europe and Africa Expanding overseas trade – 400% ( ) Ruled by Kaiser Wilhelm II
