Brief Overview of the RNP RNP – Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa Brazilian National Research and Education Network – Created as a project in September 1989 by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), – A non-profit institution in 1999 Serves more than 1300 campi – Over 130 public universities – Over 30 public and private research centers.

RNP national backbone RNP national backbone – Ipê network – Uses links from Telecom Companies – Connects PoP’s in the state capitals + RNP’s metropolitan networks

RNP Services Catalog Communication and Colaboration Strategic Hosting Identity Management Network Infrastructure support Content Delivery Network

Multipresence system Objective To create a low cost videoconference and collaboration system that allows communication in any device, anywhere and at any network rate 5

Multipresence system Modules (own development) – High Definition communication (HD 1080p) – Ultra-High Definition communication (UHD 4K). – Web conferencing system (Mconf). – Mobile devices and SIP phones (Mconf) – Integration with legacy videoconferencing systems. Integration (Third party) – Content sharing among the participants with SAGE2 6

8 ~2.000 km between panels Panel 1 Brasília Demonstration during Forum RNP (aug/15) Panel 2 Porto Alegre

Demonstration during Forum RNP (aug/15) Ultra High Definition 9 Transmission of Ultra HD (~3 Gbps) compressed to 20 Mbps for very high quality, like live surgery

Demonstration during Forum RNP (aug/15) Collaboration using SAGE2 14 All participants can share content (images, applications, documents). SAGE2 concatenates the TVs as one video wall.

Possible application to the Multipresence system Cost reduction by using the same physical room to many purposes. 21

General Architecture Tablet App (Web): runs on a web browser – provides the user interface to room control Process Manager (C++): runs in background on each PC, and opens and closes the desired view in each TV according to the selected profile, and a webservice, that keeps the entire system synchronized Message Server (Ruby on Rails and Node.js): interacts with all applications and controls them in order to execute the user commands. Application PRAV Player (C++): High definition and ultra-high definition Application Mconf (Flash with ongoing development in WebRTC): webconference with computers and mobile devices (iOS and Android). Integration with legacy videoconference systems Application SAGE2: content collaboration 22

Conclusion The Multipresence system integrates different technologies in a low cost panel, allowing a broad range of participants in heterogeneous platforms, from a SIP phone to a 4K video. We are running a pilot this year. If your institution is interested, we will be glad to cooperate. 23
