How can the metric system be used to measure mass? Do Now: How do you know how much you weigh?

What is weight? Weight is the measure of how hard gravity pulls on an object. The weight of an object can change if the gravity that pulls on it changes. The metric unit for mass is the Newton.

What is mass? Mass measures how much mass is in an object. The metric unit of measurement is the gram. A triple beam balance is used to measure mass.

How do we use a triple beam balance? Calibrate the scale. Start with the largest measurement possible and work backwards. Make sure the arrow on the part you move is centered on the measurement.

How is a triple beam balance used?

How can we measure the mass of a liquid? Measure the mass of an empty container (such as a beaker). Pour the liquid you want into the beaker. Measure the mass of the beaker plus the liquid. Find the difference by subtracting.
