Reducing Carbon Footprint of a Health care Facility Understanding and Simplifying Bio-medical Waste Management A training manual for trainers

Carbon footprint of a Health care Facility Mercury emissions of a bedded hospital- 3kgs/year A 700 bedded hospital can cut down its green house gas emissions by almost 1300 MTCO 2 equivalent. Understanding and Simplifying Bio-medical Waste Management A training manual for trainers

Estimated plastic Bio-medical waste generated in India Recycling waste can save -124,237 MTCO2E emissions /year. 1 ton recycled paper can 24 trees, thus, 250 pounds of carbon dioxide can be reduced from the air each year. Calculating Carbon Footprints for Waste Management A web based calculator is available on USEPA site which calculates the carbon footprints w.r.t. the waste. Calculation: Baseline scenario: All waste is mixed and is thrown in the municipal dump from where it is land filled. Alternative scenario: All general waste is segregated and given for recycling/ composting. The BMW plastic is also segregated, disinfected, mutilated and sent for recycling. Average is taken for both the scenarios and the emission reduction/ increase is calculated. Understanding and Simplifying Bio-medical Waste Management A training manual for trainers

Reducing Carbon footprints through waste segregation Staff training Minimizing yellow waste Recycling Decentralized management of municipal waste Reducing packaging waste Development of a green purchasing policy. Reduction of energy consumption Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi has taken the following measures to reduce is energy consumption: Development of Energy Management Policy Installation of Solar Water Heating System (30,000 LPD) Installation of VFD in Pumps of Laundry and Water Treatment Plants. Regulating the hours of lighting in various buildings. Installation of capacitor bank thereby maintaining power factor at 0.99 on continuous basis. Switching to CFL / electronic blasts Shifting to centralized AC Plant for old building Energy savings of 932,500 (kWh) and thus, 670MT of carbon dioxide/year. Reduction of water consumption Water use reduction programmes have saved 20-30% of water. Following steps can be taken to reduce water consumption: Audit current water use Identify water conservation opportunities Determine cost of opportunities and potential return on investment. Prioritize water conservation opportunities. Develop a phased plan Implement plan. Measure and document success Understanding and Simplifying Bio-medical Waste Management A training manual for trainers

Circular economy w.r.t. Bio-medical waste management Circular economy is based on use, reuse, repair, refurbish and recycle, in an (almost) closed loop It reduces waste production In India, recycling by the informal sector in Delhi alone accounts for estimated net GHG reductions of 962,133 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (TCO2e) each year. Green purchasing Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) is the act of purchasing products/services whose environmental impacts have been found to be less in comparison to other products/services. A policy statement on EPP will act as an initiative in the direction of green purchasing. Understanding and Simplifying Bio-medical Waste Management A training manual for trainers

Stockholm County Council PVC Elimination Policy Resolution to phase out PVC passed in PVC has been virtually phased out from many disposable medical products Procedure packs were introduced in The Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust (RLBUH) leading to savings of £175,000 per year, volume reduction in packaging waste by 90% (around 2.6 tonnes) and thus reduction in carbon footprint by five tonnes. Hospital waste management 1.Non-medical or general waste: makes up 80% of the total waste 2.Bio-medical waste: makes up 15-20% of the hospital waste 3.E-Waste 4.Mercury waste Understanding and Simplifying Bio-medical Waste Management A training manual for trainers
