 Your eyes are like your ears, breaking eye contact signals you: ◦ Aren’t paying attention ◦ Don’t wish to participate  It is considered very rude to break eye contact. ◦ Practice this during class!

 Area in which most signs are made in normal conversation  Try not to sign outside of your signing space

 Dominant hand ◦ The hand you use most often (usually the hand you use for writing) ◦ You will use this hand for fingerspelling ◦ This hand will move more & be used more often  Non-dominate hand ◦ Your other hand ◦ Does not move as much as the dominate hand ◦ Not to be used for fingerspelling  Pick a hand to be your dominate hand and stay that way! Do not go back and forth between your right and left hand.

 Shows auditory information: ◦ Tone of voice ◦ Emotion ◦ Intent ◦ Questions  Facial Expressions must match the sign. ◦ Ex: Happy, sad, excited

 Sloppy signing is like mumbling and can cause the sign to have a different meaning.

 ASL does not match English word order… ◦ English: I’m going to the store. (Subject, Verb, Object) ◦ ASL: store, me, to-go (Object, Subject, Verb)

 Is not a substitute for signs ◦ If you don’t know a sign, do not fingerspell it ◦ Try to work around the sign…  Ex: If you don’t know the sign for “FARM”, sign “ANIMALS LIVE THERE” and the Deaf person will help you figure out the sign for “FARM”  Used for a specific purpose ◦ Proper nouns  Titles of movies, books, restaurants  Names

1. Hand shape – letters, numbers, classifiers 2. Palm orientation – in, out, up, down 3. Location – head, torso, front of body 4. Movement – back & forth, up & down, circular, wavy 5. Non-Manuals Signals (NMS) – signals, with meaning, not made with your hands ◦ Ex: facial expressions Summer to be Ugly Dry
