Communication Communication The ability to relay information to others verbally or non verbally Content - the information conveyed in a presentation Delivery - the way information is conveyed Context - the environment, attitudes and beliefs of the audience and the nature of the times.

Verbal and Non verbal cues Non verbal cues – things the presenter uses beyond their voice to convey meaning to their presentation Examples of non verbal cues – guestures, eye contact, posture, facial expressions and physical appearance The audience 60% of the meaning of your speech from non verbal cues Explain the use of your visual aids to the audience. Talk to your audience not the visual aids

Feedback Feedback – involves the giver and the receiver exchanging information Paraphrase/restate to show you understand Feedback is a gift that helps you to improve your presentation Give feedback about things the presenter can control Be honest but try not to be brutal 4-1 Rule. State 4 positive thing and 1 negative comment

Types of Presentations Chronological – time order; step by step Spatial – how items relate to each other in their physical environment Topical – information divided into sub topics and lareger Cause and Effect – shows how an action causes a certain outcome Problem Solution – explain a problem and suggest a solution

More on Styles of Presentations Persuasive – used to get audience to change their minds Informative – used to give information about a topic Entertaining – used to amuse the audience Extemporaneous – structured and flexible presentation, note cards are often used. Manuscript – used to relay important and detailed information Impromptu – speech give without much preparation

Be Knowledgeable Explicitly state the purpose of the speech Your credibility will be established by Your competence (knowledge) and your character (trustworthiness)
