Showcasing Hill College Redesigning the library for fall 2016

Library Staff Perspective students view the library. View the staff. Helpfulness Hospitality Demeanor Knowledge of equipment. Show appreciation. Show respect and a good listener. Give support.

Library of the Past Library 1979 – Function over aesthetic  The library at the time only had 2 side windows at the back door.  Minimal lighting at night and was intimidating when leaving the building.

Old Technology  Typewriters instead of computers.  Noisy.  Bundle some.  Not near as many functions.  Mimeograph machine  Only word processing was offered  10 key adding machines.  These are just a few of the things that the computer lab offered

Today’s Library  Move-in day--January 1996  large and well lit  9 large windows  great panoramic view of beautiful sun sets,  gorgeous snowfalls  Better Seating along with durable tables.

Today’s libra ry  This is a picture of the library today.  The tall windows on the left were a great asset to our beautiful modern library.  The Heavy traditional furniture as held up well. Ruggedness assures you of comfort of stability.  Front Lighting greets you at night.  As you enter the library a warm cozy feeling a waits you.

New Technology  Computers come into play.  On line courses available.  Math made available.  English.  Better printers.  Copiers faster.

NEW LIBRARY  Beginning stage  Down stairs  New Computers  Circulating Books  New Video Room

Future of library  Circulating desk will be located in the center of the building.  With hope there will be a coffee bar with various types of drinks and other types of eats.  2 nd phase will begin when all of the books and shelves are moved to the lower floor.  The previous work room will become our video room with seating.  Plans for the future are to enlarge the computer lab, making room for a laser cutter.

Conclusion  The main function of the staff is to help students reach their potential by creating an environment that is pleasing, relaxing atmosphere, and feel that each and every one is important. Encourage them to continue their education by giving them extra attention if needed. We want to make them feel at home and feel they can come and talk with us at any time.. By showing these little steps below it will make them feel they are important and the staff cares about their feelings and their ability as well.  Body language is a vital key to the staff as whether or not the student is seeking help or just someone to talk too.  Offer help when one is overwhelmed  Listen when others have a perplexed expression.  Help when others are seeking help.  Breaking silence can make a world of difference on how they perceive the library.  A smile can go a long way.  Words of kindness can break silence.
