B o r o u g h o f S t e e l t o n Steelton History Pennsylvania “Steel Town” once employing 30,000 steel workers. Suffering from 25 years of rapid job loss and community disinvestment. Fighting negative perceptions of crime, job opportunity, education, and desirable housing.

B o r o u g h o f S t e e l t o n 2005 Redevelopment Plan Focused Main Street Renewal as a complement to housing improvement and other community amenity enhancements; Targeted eight acre tract of property in the center of the downtown for redevelopment; Development of a renewal concept plan including; commercial buildings, public space, streetscape improvements, and parking; Why Steelton?

B o r o u g h o f S t e e l t o n Change the current trends of the population, employment base, and tax base Create safe and coherent streetscape for pedestrians Create brighter walkways Calm and “slow down” traffic on Front Street Preserve Steelton’s architectural and ethnic heritage Create easy-to-use design guidelines Create a “greener” downtown Promote durability, timelessness, and quality for each design element Create a “real and achievable” plan for phased implementation Plan Objectives
