What motivated you to choose this workshop today? Talking with Patients about Healthy Lifestyles Thinking about or planning something? Leadership role / strategic overview? Delivering a behaviour change programme already? Want to know (or challenge?) what it’s all about?

What we set out to do to increase the capacity of the NHS workforce to deliver health promotion messages to clients/patients to embed health promotion and disease prevention thinking in the everyday work of health and social care employees Talking with Patients about Healthy Lifestyles

A vision for a public health workforce: that all workers, at differing level of competence are able to engage individuals with confidence using basic skills of awareness, engagement and communication to introduce such ideas as lifestyle behaviour change, and to motivate individuals to improve self care and management. Talking with Patients about Healthy Lifestyles

A National Priority... Fairer Outcomes for All: “assess the potential of equipping NHS and social services staff with the skills and competencies required to make every contact count in supporting and encouraging people to stay healthy.” Working Differently, Working Together: “build capacity and skills of staff to ensure that every interaction with patients is an opportunity for health improvement.” Talking with Patients about Healthy Lifestyles

...And Locally “Adding life to years and years to life” Hywel Dda Health Board Vision Talking with Patients about Healthy Lifestyles

What does that mean on the ground? So, if someone tells me they want to lose weight... what do I actually do?

Have a chat with your neighbours: What are the skills, knowledge and attitudes that will enable ‘Hywel’ to make that contact count? How can Hywel’s workplace culture & environment help or hinder? Talking with Patients about Healthy Lifestyles So, if someone tells me they want to lose weight... what do I actually do?

Brief advice Brief intervention Motivational interviewing All patients Fewer patients All staff Fewer staff Different levels of intervention

What do I actually do? Use a simple model of brief advice...

...backed up by resources Talking with Patients about Healthy Lifestyles

So What? Participants report increased confidence and importance after training, but... Are they using brief advice in practice? Are they reflecting on and developing their practice? Our vision... that all workers, at differing level of competence are able to engage individuals with confidence using basic skills of awareness, engagement and communication to introduce such ideas as lifestyle behaviour change, and to motivate individuals to improve self care and managemen t. Talking with Patients about Healthy Lifestyles

Sustainability So... Will the HB take ownership? Who will deliver the training in future? How much training time will be allocated? Will staff be released to attend? We set out to... increase the capacity of the NHS workforce to deliver health promotion messages to clients/patients embed health promotion and disease prevention thinking in the everyday work of health and social care employees Talking with Patients about Healthy Lifestyles

Where do we go from here? Talking with Patients about Healthy Lifestyles
