The Lily of the Valley, In Him alone I see All I need to cleanse and make me fully whole.

In sorrow He’s my comfort, In trouble He’s my stay; He tells me every care on Him to roll.

He’s the Lilly of the Valley, The Bright and Morning Star; He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul

He all my griefs has taken And all my sorrows borne. In temptation He’s my strong And mighty tower;

I have all for Him forsaken, And all my idols torn From my heart, and now He keeps me by His power.

Though all the world forsake me And Satan tempt me sore, Through Jesus I shall safely reach the goal.

He’s the Lilly of the Valley, The Bright and Morning Star; He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul

He will never, never leave me, Nor yet forsake me here, While I live by faith and do His blessed will;

A wall of fire about me, I’ve nothing now to fear. With His manna He my hungry soul shall fill.

Then sweeping up to glory I’ll see His blessed face, Where rivers of delight shall ever roll.

He’s the Lilly of the Valley, The Bright and Morning Star; He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul

Following the Man That Can Forgive Sin Matt. 8:2-4; 9:1-8; Mark 1:40- 2:12-45 Luke 5:1-26 Jesus’ wonderful attributes, characteristics & abilities include: Humility - the eternal Word became a man fulfilling many prophecies Fulfilling all righteousness in His baptism & defeating the devil when tempted Performing miracles: Turning water into wine

Following the Man That Can Forgive Sin Matt. 8:2-4; 9:1-8; Mark 1:40- 2:12-45 Luke 5:1-26 Jesus’ wonderful attributes, characteristics & abilities include: Zeal for God’s honor: Cleansing the Temple, His Father’s house, beginning to teach Compassion: Revealing Himself to the Samaritans and spending two days teaching them

Following the Man That Can Forgive Sin Matt. 8:2-4; 9:1-8; Mark 1:40- 2:12-45 Luke 5:1-26 Jesus’ wonderful attributes, characteristics & abilities include: Teaching with authority even when it caused those in Nazareth to reject Him Boldly teaching throughout Galilee and graciously healing any who were sick and casting out demons

Following the Man That Can Forgive Sin Matt. 8:2-4; 9:1-8; Mark 1:40- 2:12-45 Luke 5:1-26 Jesus’ most important ability to us is being able to forgive sin

Second Call of the Fisherman Luke 5:1-11 Jesus solves the difficulty of speaking to such a large crowd by speaking from a boat just offshore Luke 5:4-11 A miracle catch - the nets were about to break so they get help from James & John

Second Call of the Fisherman Luke 5:1-11 Jesus was not a professional fisherman, but as Lord of the universe He knew when and where to catch fish Don’t take the Lord for granted, remember His identity and your need of Him Peter was ashamed of his sinfulness, but Jesus calmed his fears and called them to a different vocation

Second Call of the Fisherman Luke 5:1-11 A different event than Matthew 4: Different nets, type of fishing and location of James & John They continued to help in the family fishing business until Jesus called them to a different vocation Few serve the Lord vocationally, but every Christian is to serve the Lord full time as a way of life

Cleansing the Leper Matthew 8:2-4; Mark 1:40-45; Luke 5:12-16 The man is covered with leprosy, yet comes to Jesus Mosaic law required lepers to stay apart & warn people when they were near Modern medicine can usually cure leprosy and other skin diseases, but it was incurable in ancient times

Cleansing the Leper Matthew 8:2-4; Mark 1:40-45; Luke 5:12-16 The man bows down & humbly makes his request - vs. 12 We make requests of the Lord believing He is able, not demands believing that He must Jesus, the man of righteousness, reached out and touched the unclean leprous man and healed him -

Cleansing the Leper Matthew 8:2-4; Mark 1:40-45; Luke 5:12-16 Jesus came to seek and save sinners : He can make the unclean clean Jesus told the man to tell no one but the priests in order to keep the Law and as a testimony to them The man told people anyway and the crowds became larger

Forgiving Sin Matthew 9:1-8; Mark 2:1-12; Luke 5:17-26 Jesus is in His own home in Capernaum where a large crowd has gathered to hear Him teach Four men want to help a paralyzed man get to Jesus, but they cannot get through the crowd

Forgiving Sin Matthew 9:1-8; Mark 2:1-12; Luke 5:17-26 The men make a hole in the flat roof of the house and lower the man down to Jesus They were serious in their effort & willing to do what was needed in order to succeed

Forgiving Sin Matthew 9:1-8; Mark 2:1-12; Luke 5:17-26 Luke 5:20 - Jesus is not upset about His roof, but recognizes their faith & pronounces his sins forgiven The scribes, Pharisees and most Jews believed that such illness was due to that person’s sins - cf John 9

Forgiving Sin Matthew 9:1-8; Mark 2:1-12; Luke 5:17-26 People do suffer from the consequences of their own sin - cf. Galatians 6:7-8, Romans 1:18f People also suffer because of the consequences of the sins of other people We also suffer because we live in a fallen and sin cursed world - the consequence of Adam’s sin

Forgiving Sin Matthew 9:1-8; Mark 2:1-12; Luke 5:17-26 The man’s greatest need was the forgiveness of his sins, not physical healing His sins were forgiven - dismissed - remitted - sent away - then and would continue to be in the future Luke 5:21 - the scribes and Pharisees thought Jesus was blaspheming because only God can forgive sin

Forgiving Sin Matthew 9:1-8; Mark 2:1-12; Luke 5: Timothy 2:5 - Only Jesus is the mediator between God and man - you must receive forgiveness from Him Luke 5:22 / Matthew 9:4 - Jesus rebuked them for their evil hearts and reasoning of unbelief

Forgiving Sin Matthew 9:1-8; Mark 2:1-12; Luke 5:17-26 Luke 5: Jesus sets up a tangible test to prove His intangible authority to forgive sin Luke 5:25 - the man is cured of the paralysis & the weak muscles, he picks up his bed & leaves rejoicing

Forgiving Sin Matthew 9:1-8; Mark 2:1-12; Luke 5:17-26 Luke 5:26 - The crowd is amazed and joins in the celebration of glorifying God

Conclusions What will you do with Jesus? Will you be like the scribes and Pharisees who remained skeptical in their unbelief? Will you be like the astonished crowd that praised Jesus for the moment, but still does not believe in Him?

Conclusions What will you do with Jesus? Will you be like the paralyzed man who had faith to be forgiven? Will you be like the disciples who committed themselves to followed Jesus wherever He might lead?

I’ll Go Where You Want Me to Go It may not be on the mountain’s height Or over the stormy sea; It may not be at the battle’s front My Lord will have need of me Mary Brown / Charles E Prior / Carrie E. Rounsefell © Public Domain ARR UBP – CCLI License No # 668

But if by a still, small voice He calls To paths that I do not know, I’ll answer, dear Lord, with my hand in Thine, I’ll go where You want me to go

Perhaps today there are loving words Which Jesus would have me speak; There may be now, in the paths of sin, Some wand’rer whom I should seek

O Savior, If Thou will be by Guide, Tho’ dark and rugged the way, My voice shall echo the message sweet I’ll go where You want me to go

There’s surely somewhere a lowly place In earth’s harvest fields so wide Where I may labor thro’ life’s short day For Jesus, the Crucified

So, trusting may all to Thy tender care And knowing Thou lovest me, I’ll do They will with a heart sincere. I’ll go where You want me to go
