NOTES 0-5C QUADRATIC FORMULA Student Learning Goals: Students will be able to solve quadratic equations using the quadratic formula

Solving Quadratic Equations We can solve quadratic equations using various methods. We can solve by graphing, factoring, completing the square, and using the quadratic formula. When we solve a quadratic function we are looking for all the possible values that make the equation true.

Steps for using the Quadratic Formula Step 1: Set equation equal to zero Step 2: Find the values for a, b, and c Step 3: Substitute those values in to the quadratic formula Step 4: Evaluate using the order of operations

Example 1 Solve

Example 2 Solve

Example 3 Solve

Example 4 A football is thrown through the air. The height, h, of the ball (in feet) after the distance, d (also in feet), the ball travels horizontally is given by: What is the distance that the ball will travel (in feet) before it hits the ground?
