5-1: Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring By Mr. Smith

Solving Quadratic Functions by Graphing Quadratic Equations are quadratic functions that are set equal to a value. In order to solve a quadratic equation algebraically, the equation must be set equal to zero. The solutions of a quadratic equation are called the roots of the equation. Another name for solutions are zeroes and x-intercepts.

Types of Solutions for a Quadratic Function What do we need to write any simple quadratic equation with solutions?

Zero Product Property For any real numbers a and b, if ab=0, then either a=0, b=0, or both.

In this first example, the equation is already factored and is set equal to zero. To solve, simply set the individual factors equal to zero. The solutions are -3 and 1/2.
