Blog for storyboard I have used a storyboard to identify different areas of the structure, this has helped me to decide were to use key features within the clip By Rhys Salim
Blog In the first section of my blog the Grinch is sliding down the rocks and the music which I created starts to play starting with an piano glissando and then it goes straight into the chords. Mickey mousing is one of the things that I used a lot through out the Grinch mimicking the Grinch's movement and actions with sound. All of the chords used are played in a way which represents the Grinch's movements and by making the chords diminished and sometimes adding in a 7 th it gave of a grumpy emotion which is what my goal to represent this.
Blog The second image in my story board show him talking to a dog about spoiling Christmas for the village, with the chords still playing in the in the background (non-diegetic music) the bassline slowly starts to get louder (I adjusted the dynamics using automation) as the chord fade out showing that the thought of spoiling Christmas has over come him, at this point I also started to add in the Grinch's speech using a deep drum sound from the bluebirds drum kit, this made the video more entertaining to watch. I edited the EQ for the drum kit to bring out the lower frequencies making his voice sound darker.
Blog This image is when you first see the village I have added a sample starts here, I chose carol of the bells from Home Alone as there are bells in the scene and this is a repetative Christmas song I thought I could work with. I mixed the sample with parts from the song I sequenced on to a midi track. The melody and sample stops when the star appears to make more of a focus on the star. This is one of the major transition in the music because it moves from a really grumpy, deep sounding mood to a happy sounding, light, higher pitched music. This part is also contrasting as the texture is much thinker with the additional parts.
In the next image it shows what is going on inside the village. When the camera zooms in you can see some bells playing,I used Mickey mousing for the four bells. To create suspense I stopped the sample and the main melody and let the bells play as the star was about to be revealed to the villagers. I slowed down the music to ensure the music happened at the right point –the hit points
Blog In this image the sample stops playing but the sequence piece continues to play, alone side my own synthesised part, using choir to symbolise the star rising, I lowered the volume of the sequenced music, and gradually raising the volume of the choir which was an ascending passage.
Blog In this image you see the Grinch confused as the whoos aren’t complaining about missing their presents. The samples and sequence of the carol of the bell stopped. There is no background music, instead I just added timpani for the speech and a xylophone for the hitpoints when the Grinch blinks. The thin texture also represents the Grinch being alone.
the Grinch suddenly has a change of mind and tries to save Christmas, this is where the sample comes in again and it is played in time with my own synthesised part made to reflect the Grinch's feelings and reflective facial expressions. I added sound effects to the final section to make everything sound rhythmic; the dogs and the Grinch's foot steps and them moving through the snow. I added to the texture by including a drum, this made the piece sound more exciting as the pace of the characters movement increased. The things that I added in were major and minor chords, alternating each time the background colour changed, I kept the chords very similar, moving some parts chromatically. This made a huge difference tp the mood in the clip.
Blog This is the final image which show the Grinch is now thinking about his actions as his heart has grown bigger, I showed this by a drum beat mimicking a heart beat getting faster. The sample is playing again in the background as I wanted to build the tension in this part.
