Metric System

Let’s see how well you know the English measurement system. What units do we use to measure length? mass? volume?

Length –12 inches = 1 foot –3 feet = 1 yard –220 yards = 1 furlong –8 furlongs = 1 mile –5,280 feet = 1 mile –1,760 yards = 1mile

Mass –437.5 grains = 1 ounce –16 ounces = 1 pound –14 pounds = 1 stone –100 pounds = 1 hundredweight –20 hundredweights = 1 ton

Volume –Teaspoons –Tablespoon = 3 teaspoons –Fluid ounce = 2 tablespoons 6 teaspoons –Cups = 8 ounces, 16 tablespoons –Pints = 2 cups, 16 ounces –Quarts= 2 pints, 4 cups –Gallons= 4 quarts, 8 pints, 16 cups

Forget gallons, quarts, pints and cups…..let’s try something easier like inches and feet. How many inches are in a foot? How many feet are in a yard? How many yards, feet and inches are in a mile?

Ever watch a horse race? What’s a furlong? Who came up with this craziness? 220 feet or 1/8 of a mile

In early times, units of measurement were defined more for convenience than accuracy. Foot – length of one’s foot Yard – Circumference of King Henry I waist Yard – Distance from one’s nose to thumb when arm is extended to one’s side.

Why Decimal? Question: Which column would you rather add? Inch-pound units Metric units 1 yard, 2 feet, 3-1/4 inches meters 1 foot, 11-3/16 inches meters 2 feet, 5-1/2 inches meters 3 yards, 1 foot, 6-5/8 inches meters ==================== =========== ? yards, ? feet, ? inches ? meters ? Hint: The two sums are the same. Answer: 6 yards, 2 feet, 2-9/16 inches; or meters

More Craziness. Pace – distance of two steps of a marching army Mile – 1000 paces Acre – the amount of land a yolk of oxen could plow in one day. Scruple = 20 grains 3 scruples = 1 dram Rod = 16 ½ feet Rod – the total length of the left feet of the first 16 men coming out of church on Sunday morning.

There has to be something easier than the English system. Metric system to the rescue!!

Metric Units Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. The base unit of volume in the metric system in the liter and is represented by L or l. Standard: 1 liter is equal to one cubic decimeter Metric Units 1 liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (mL) 1 milliliter (mL) = 1 cm 3 (or cc) = 1 gram* Which is larger? Measuring Volume Top Image: Bottom Image: We will be using graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids and other objects. Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a graduated cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in the cylinder? _____mL What causes the meniscus? A concave meniscus occurs when the molecules of the liquid attract those of the container. The glass attracts the water on the sides.

Metric Units Mass refers to the amount of matter in an object. The base unit of mass in the metric system is the kilogram and is represented by kg. (NOTICE NOT A GRAM) Standard: 1 kilogram is equal to the mass of the International Prototype Kilogram (IPK), a platinum-iridium cylinder kept by the BIPM at Sèvres, France. Measuring Mass We will be using triple-beam balances to find the mass of various objects. The objects are placed on the scale and then you move the weights on the beams until you get the lines on the right-side of the scale to match up. Once you have balanced the scale, you add up the amounts on each beam to find the total mass. What would be the mass of the object measured in the picture? _______ + ______ + _______ = ________ g

Measuring Mass – Triple-Beam Balance 1 st – Place the film canister on the scale. 2 nd – Slide the large weight to the right until the arm drops below the line. Move the rider back one groove. Make sure it “locks” into place. 3 rd – Repeat this process with the top weight. When the arm moves below the line, back it up one groove. 4 th – Slide the small weight on the front beam until the lines match up. 5 th – Add the amounts on each beam to find the total mass to the nearest tenth of a gram.
