Multiplication and Division Word Problems Laura Carter 4 th Grade

Bellwork

Objective: I can recognize when to multiply and divide in word problems and solve it correctly. 4.oa.a.2

Key words that say to MULTIPLY! Turn to your bookmark and let’s look at the words that tell us to multiply.  multiply  Each  Times  Double/triple  Total  In all  Product  twice Review and Revisit

Key words that say to DIVIDE! Turn to your bookmark and let’s look at the words that tell us to divide.  Divide  Split evenly  Half  Shared  Equal/equally  groups Review and Revisit

Steps to solve word problems 1. Read the problem carefully. 2. Read and Underline the question. 3. Box key words 4. Circle key numbers and cross out un-needed numbers. 4. Draw a picture or make a chart if needed, to help solve the problem. Show ALL work!& Label! 5. Write a number sentence for the problem a nd solve. Does your answer make sense? Review and Revisit

Last week we talked about writing equations that compare numbers using multiplication. Like, 3 times as many as 4 is 12. This week we are going to solve word problems that compare. Take a look!

Hannah scored 3 goals last season. She scored 4 times as many goals this season. How many goals did Hannah score this season? Last SeasonThis Season How many goals did Hannah score last season? How could you skip count to find the number she scored this season? Besides addition, what operation can you use to solve this problem? What is 4 times as many as 3? Modeling

Review and revisit:

Now let’s try with an unknown amount. Juan found 3 times as many seashells at the beach as Jeremy found. Juan found 24 shells. Write and solve an equation to find the number of shells Jeremy found. 1 st Let’s model what you know.  Jeremy found one group of shells. Juan found 3 times as many shells. Jeremy’s Shells Juan’s Shells 2 nd Write an equation to help understand the problem.  3 x Jeremy’s shells= Juan’s shells  3 x J= 24 Ask yourself, 3 times what is 24. or Divide 24 by 3 to find the number in each group: 8 ? ? ?? 24 Modeling

CFU: Whiteboards A student grew two plants for the science fair. The first plant was 4 centimeters tall. The second plant was three times as tall. How tall was the second plant? Draw a model to represent the problem. Write and solve an multiplication equation to represent the height of the second plant.

Write about it!  Samuel joined the cross country team this school year. He can now run 5 times the amount of miles he could run during the summer. Samuel can now run 10 miles. Write and solve an equation to represent the number of miles Samuel could run at the start of the school year.  Explain in words, equations, and or models how the number 10 in this problem can be both a product and a dividend?  Swap with your face partner to check and critique.

Exit Ticket  The shortest living man on earth is 21 inches tall. The tallest living woman on earth is 4 times taller than the shortest man. How tall is the tallest living woman on earth? Draw a model and write an equation to solve.

Day 2

Objective: I can recognize when to multiply and divide in word problems and solve it correctly. 4.oa.a.2

We have been talking about multiplication and division words for a while now. What are some key multiplication and division words?

Steps to solve word problems 1. Read the problem carefully. 2. Read and Underline the question. 3. Box key words 4. Circle key numbers and cross out un-needed numbers. 4. Draw a picture or make a chart if needed, to help solve the problem. Show ALL work!& Label! 5. Write a number sentence for the problem a nd solve. Does your answer make sense? Review and Revisit

Guided Practice: Whiteboards  Monique and Wint are both reading the same book. Monique read 63 pages last weekend. She read 7 times as many pages as Wint. Write and solve an equation to find the number of pages Wint read. You know Monique read 63 pages Wint read 7 times less than Monique Equation: Wint’s books x 7 = 63 or W x 7 = 63 or 63 ÷ 7= W W= 9

Putting it all together Day 3

Objective: I can recognize when to multiply and divide in word problems and solve it correctly. 4.oa.a.2

Practice  The Tigers scored nine times as many points as the Eagles. The Eagles scored four points. How many points did the Tigers score? Write an equation and solve.

Practice  Amanda has 3 times more books about mammals than reptiles. She has 12 books about mammals. Write and solve an equation to show how many reptile book she has.

Practice  Selena has 30 Facebook friends. Julie has 5 times as many. How many Facebook friends does Julie have? Write an equation and solve.

Practice  A red hat costs $18 and a blue hat costs $6. How many times as much does the red hat cost than the blue hat?

Extra practice

Guided Practice Neighbor Partner: Whiteboard Practice. Tell the key word and solve

Neighbor Partner: Whiteboard  Each of you will create your own multiplication word problem. When you finish, swap with your neighbor to solve.

Whiteboard: Identify the problems that require multiplication to solve. 1.On a field trip, two sisters found frog eggs in a pond. Desiree found 82 eggs and Shanee found 118 eggs. How many eggs did the sisters find? 2.If 16 potato chips is a serving size and there are 5 servings per bag, how many potato chips are in each bag? 3.A moving company moved 3,400 families this year. Last year, the company moved 2,549 families. How many families did the company move in the past two years? 4.At the rodeo, 32 people signed up for bronco riding. The 4 horses will give the same number of rides. How many rides will each horse give? 5.A class of 55 students went on a field trip to collect seashells. If the students collected 15 shells each, how many shells did they collect?

Independent practice

Exit Ticket Follow the steps to solving word problems. Use your highlighter to highlight key words and numbers. Do your work on the back. Clayton keeps pet mice. If his 33 mice have 12 babies each, how many mice will clayton have in all?
