Verbal skills -Listening -Open question - Closed question - Paraphrasing -summarising

Non- verbal skills -Eye contact - Appearance - Facial expressions - Hand movements -Head movements -Signs, Symbols, Pictures - Posture

listening The definition of listening means when you focus on something that someone is saying ( Human Communication) Example Advantage - The EAL resident could have a translator that that could translate the English to the resident to decode the communication. Disadvantage when working with an EAL resident it would be difficult to understand them because of their accent or that their English is not being properly used to send their message to the reciever ( It hasn’t been decoded properly.)

Closed question The definition of a closed question is that to express their answer only being yes or no Example Advantage -Using a open question to the residence it would help you and the resident communicate with the answer being yes or no. Disadvantage -t would not give the more of an advantage to communicate more then to say only yes or no.

Open question The definition of an open question is a question format that limits respondents with a list of answer choices from which they must choose to answer. Example Advantage - Using a open question it would help the staff and the residence to communicate more with each other, and to express more words than just yes or no ( open question ) Disadvantage By using a open question to the resident it wouldn’t give you the straight answer to the question that has been asked.

paraphrasing The definition of paraphrase is a restatement of the meaning of a text or passage using other words. Examples Advantage - using paraphrasing what the residence is saying would give a better message to send out to the receiver. Disadvantage Using paraphrasing wouldn’t help the communication of the resident to improve.

Summarising The definition of summarising is the brief information of something. Example Advantage Workers summarising the problems of the resident could solve the issue quickly, and communicated to a doctor, or a social workers/therapists. Disadvantage The workers might have not decoded the communication from the resident, that could lead to a bad summarising. ( and not solve the problem)

Eye contact -The meaning of eye contact is when two people look directly into each others eyes. -Example -Advantage - Working with an deaf resident you will need to make good eye contact to send the message across. -Disadvantage A deaf impaired might not give the eye contact ( due to the difficulty of hearing) which might make hard by sending the message across.

Facial expressions The definition of facial expressions is one or more motions or positions of the muscles beneath the skin of the face. Example Advantage -working with a deaf resident you will need to be able to make facial expressions to send the message across to the deaf reciever. Disadvantage The facial expressions the staffs make might be looking confusing to get the message across.

Hand Movements The meaning of hand movements is when you move your hand to communicate in a different way ( hand gesture.) Examples Advantage Crossing the road with an deaf resident you will need to use your hand gesture to communicate which way to cross. Disadvantage The deaf resident might have the wrong understanding of the gesture which leads to bad communication, and cross the wrong way.

Signs, symbols, pictures Symbols, and pictures are visual aids to communication Example Advantage A deaf resident needed to go to the toilet can look at the basic signs to know which one to go too. Disadvantage The signs can look confusing. The effectiveness The signs, symbols. and pictures can not be rarely misunderstood, which show that it is effective on the residents.

posture Posture is making a certain standing position. Examples Advantage Using posture to communicate with the deaf people such as crossing the road, you need to use the posture to show them. Disadvantage The deaf resident might not understand the posture of the staff.

Appearance is the way you look. Examples Advantage Using certain clothing that won’t put off the resident. Disadvantage Use of punk rock (dark clothing)that might scare them or depress them. The effectiveness Appearance can be highly effective through communication, because the residents can only communicate with the staff if they like the decent clothes they are wearing.

proximity The state, quality, sense, or fact of being near or next; closeness Example Advantage The closeness is that there is a better communication decoded. Disadvantage the distance of the staff and the resident is that the communication can not be understood properly. The effectiveness Proximity is highly effective on communication, because it is better understood by the closeness then the distance.
