Unit One: The First Americans Prentice Hall Lit Early America (Beginnings to 1800)

Discussion: A Historical Recap  In 1492, North America was already populated by several hundred Native American tribes.  Nomadic groups migrated across the Bering Lang Bridge from Asia and settled the continent.  After Columbus, Europeans ventured to the New World, creating the first accounts of written word.  Before written word, there was oral literature passed down through generations of indigenous peoples.  Discuss picture from page 3 (next slide). Do you know any of these tribes?

Oral Tradition  Why did Native Americans use oral tradition?  Why don’t we rely on oral tradition today?  Oral tradition provided very useful information as well as history and entertainment!  Think of sitting down in your living room watching your favorite Netflix show on a 62’, HD flat screen TV!  Rewind to the s (the time period your going to be looking at) and the equivalent to that was sitting around a campfire listening to stories of oral tradition!

Notes: Literary Analysis (pg. 18)  Origin Myth: Traditional story that explains how life, social customs, living beings, or earth’s features began.  Themes: Insights on life and/or human condition that are universal.  Archetypes: symbols, patterns, or character types that repeat across cultures.

Understand Archetype  Origin Myth and Theme are concepts that are review from students’ past language arts classes.  Archetype may need to be explained further/in more detail/as review:  With an assigned partner, read through this article and choose two popular book or movie characters that fit into one of the twelve archetypes. Be prepared to share out to the class!  html
