Why did Exploration Happen Unit 1: Age of Exploration Lesson 1

What do I need to know before…..  The development of civilizations around the world, especially in Europe, East and South Asia, the Americas, and West Africa.  The role of both economics and geography in determining how countries will behave.  The development of Western civilization and technology and how it compares to development in other parts of the world.

Objectives for this lesson: 1. Competition for Asian goods fueled exploration. 2. European desire for a water route to Asia was driven by geographic barriers (i.e. the closing of the Ottoman Empire, the African continent) and avenues (i.e. sea routes).

Guiding Questions:  Why did European powers "suddenly" focus their efforts on exploration and how did their discoveries create a growing cycle of change?  How is the Ottoman Empire at least partially responsible for the European's discovery of the Americas, the eventual colonization of Africa, and the global British Empire?
