At the end of the 19 th Century, urban railway transportation began in Ottoman Empire era. In 1869, first mounted tram was used in Istanbul and in 1912, these trams began to be operated with electricity. In 1874, one of the first railway system which is called Tunnel began to be operated between Beyoglu and Karakoy in Istanbul.

There have been lots of attempts to construct metro system in Istanbul. Finally, Istanbul meets the metro in 1989 in the destination between Aksaray and Ferhatpasa. After these attempts, Istanbul has six different lines in different destination. These can be classified as the Light Rail and Metro systems.

1.Aksaray – Havalimani Metro (1989) Daily average passenger flow is passenger/day Total length of the line is 20 km with 18 stations 2.Taksim – 4. Attempts in constructing railway systems began in 1972 in Ankara. In the frame of the study between 1984 and 1989, EGO General Directorate planned 55 Km railway system network throughout Ankara by In the light of these studies, construction for the light railway system began in 1992 in Ankara.
