Presentation transcript:

Meiosis is a special type of cell division necessary for sexual reproduction and the cells that are produce are called gametes. In animals, the gametes are sperm and egg cells, while in other organisms like mushrooms and ferns the gametes are called spores. The end result is that four new cells are created from the original one. The new cells are not the same as the original one.

What can a plant or animal do because sperm cells and egg cells are created?

A plant or animal can combine their own DNA with another organism’s to create a brand new organism. This is called sexual reproduction.

This is why a child (offspring) will have some of the characteristics of each parent, but will not look exactly like either.

# of Chromosomes in the Cell: ________ after replication. Chromosome Legend Father’s Lineage: Mother’s Lineage: Chromosomes duplicate into 2 identical sets.

# of Chromosomes in the Cell: ________ Over Video: Nuclear membrane dissolves. Similar chromosomes pair with one another forming “homologous pairs”.

# of Chromosomes in the Cell: ________ Homologous pairs line up in the middle.

# of Chromosomes in the Cell: ________ One chromosome from each pair is pulled to an opposite pole.

# of Chromosomes in the Cell: ________ The nuclear membrane reforms and the cell divides into 2 daughter cells.

# of Chromosomes in each Cell: ________

Each cell contains one member of each homologous chromosome pair.

# of Chromosomes in each Cell: ________ Chromosomes line up in the middle.

# of Chromosomes in each Cell: ________ Each half of the chromosome (sister chromatids) is pulled to opposite sides of the cell.

# of Chromosomes in each Cell: ________ Nuclei form and cytokinesis occurs.

# of Chromosomes in each Cell: ________

In males these four new cells would be called sperm.

In females one of the new cells would be called the _______________ and the other three would be called ________________________.

In humans each of the new cells would contain 23 chromosomes. This is important so that when fertilization takes place the new baby will have 46 chromosomes, just like his mom and dad. If the baby is born having a different number of chromosomes than his mom and dad then he will suffer from a genetic mutation

For example, People born with 47 chromosomes rather than 46 could have conditions such as Down’s Syndrome or Patau’s Syndrome.
