TEKS A.3: use tools to collect and record information, address concepts and vocabulary A.4.C: students explore patterns, systems, and cycles by investigating characteristics of organisms B.2.A: ask questions about organisms B.2.E: communicate observations and justify explanations

Lesson Objectives The student distinguishes between living organisms and nonliving objects The student is expected to identify characteristics of living organisms and identify characteristics of nonliving objects.

Supplies notebooks, pencil, poster board, magazines, scissors, glue sticks

Engage What is a living organism? What is a nonliving object? Grab your notebooks, a pencil, and Living or Nonliving worksheet Go outside and find examples of living and nonliving things!

Vocabulary Living organisms - An individual form of life, such as a plant, animal, bacterium, protist, or fungus; a body made up of organs, organelles, or other parts that work together to carry on the various processes of life.

Vocabulary Nonliving objects- Dead or not living; inanimate body or object

7 Characteristics of Living Organisms FeedingMovementBreathing Excretion Growth Sensitivity Reproduction

Explore Each student will receive a card and they must decide if the object on their card is living or nonliving Go to the designated side of the room depending on if you are a living or nonliving thing

Explain In your groups you will create a collage One side will be living things and the other will be nonliving things Label each side

Elaborate Define Living and Nonliving things What characteristics of Living and Nonliving things? What are some examples and non examples of both?

Evaluate Complete the following worksheets:
