The Deepest “Relationship” Roots

The Deep “Community” Roots

The Shallow Roots Shared Convictions Shared Identity

Discipling Relationships The Way of Jesus.

D ISTORTED V IEWS OF D ISCIPLING  Based on bad experiences. Harshness.  Negative perspectives: “I got discipled.”  Correction is bad.  Rooted in fear and insecurity.

Who Am I? What I See Others Don’t See Others See What I Don’t See “Known” “Blind Spot” “Secrets” “Unknown”

Little Awareness = Little Growth “Known”“Blind Spot” “Secrets”“Unknown”

A W EAK ( ER ) D ISCIPLE  Hides weaknesses and fears being exposed.  Deceit.  Desire to be unknown and left alone.  Darkness.  Resents or ignores help identifying blind spots.  Pride.  Avoids discipling relationships.

Much Awareness = Much Growth “Known” “Blind Spot” “Secrets” “Unknown”

A G ROWING D ISCIPLE  Chooses to expose hidden areas.  Confesses regularly. Brings things into the Light  Values help in identifying blind spots.  Seeks advice and welcomes correction.  Desires to know God and be known.  Seeks to be vulnerable.  Pursues biblical discipling relationships.

Who Am I? What I See Others Don’t See Others See What I Don’t See Not the “Real Me” I must be shown this by others and accept it as true. I must share/confess this information. God must reveal this to me or others.

T HE P URPOSE OF D ISCIPLING  Colossians 1:28-29  We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.

Growth – Making things known. What I See Others Don’t See Others See What I Don’t See “Known” “Blind Spot” “Secrets” “Unknown”

A G ROWING D ISCIPLE  Humility  The attitude of an eager learner.  Luke 11:1 – Teach us…eager learner.  1 Corinthians 11:1; Philippians 4:9 – Imitates others Christ-likeness.  Proverbs 12:15 – Fool is right in his own eyes, wise listen to advice.  Confession  1 John 1:5-10 – Walk in the light.  James 5:16 – Confess & ask for prayer.  Proverbs 28:13 – Confess & renounce sin to find mercy.  Accepts Correction  Hebrews 12:11 – Not pleasant but bears the fruit of righteousness for those trained by it.  Proverbs 12:1 – Love it = wise. Hate it = stupid.

O LD T ESTAMENT T EACHING  Proverbs 27:5-6  Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.  Proverbs 27:17  As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.  Ecclesiastes 4:8-12  Psalm 141:5

Paul’s Instructions  Romans 15:14  I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, complete in knowledge, and competent to instruct one another.  Colossians 3:16  Let the word of Christ dwell in your richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom…

LN instruct, teach on proper behavior and belief, to correct the mind, to put right what is wrong νουθετει ͂ ν, however, describes an effect on the will and disposition, and it presupposes an opposition which has to be overcome. It seeks to correct the mind, to put right what is wrong, to improve the spiritual attitude. “The basic idea is that of the well-meaning earnestness with which one seeks to influence the mind and disposition by appropriate instruction, exhortation, warning and correction,” WORD STUDY: Admonish

Active & Reactive Discipling  Teaching & Encouraging  Proactive Discipleship  Admonishing & Correcting  Reactive Discipleship  Oil Changes not Engine Replacements

Paul’s Instructions  1 Thessalonians 5:12  Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.

Jesus’ Instructions  Prioritizing Your Spiritual Family  Luke 8:19-21  Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd.
