A boo boo during class?  SOOO if you get burned during class … What do you do????

 TELL MR. Maune!!!

What if you get a cut during class???

 Tell Mr. Maune!!

If a tool gets broken…?

TELL MR. Maune!

If you need to leave the shop or classroom…???

ASK MR. Maune! Mrs. Fay

Injury statistics  Which part of the body is most likely to get injured? Why?

Injury statistics  Which part of the body is most likely to get injured? Why?

Safety Colors  Red; Danger/ fire fighting equipment  Orange; Warning/ dangerous parts of equipment that may cut or otherwise injure  Blue; Information/ against starting equipment while it is out of working order  Black  Black/Yellow - Radioactivity  Green; designates safety and first aid equipment

Safety Colors  White: Traffic areas  White and Black Stripes: Traffic markings  Gray: Floors of work areas or table tops, a restful color  Ivory; safety color used to improve visibility by highlighting edges of machines  Vista Green: bodies of machines, vises  Aluminum: Trash cans/areas

Safety  Color coding in a shop is used to alert people to dangers and hazards  To be a safe and efficient shop it must be large enough reasonable space for each person in the shop  A clean and well-organized shop decreases the chance of accidents

Safety  Most accidents among farm workers involve machinery.

Before you use a tool:  Check the guards

Before you use an extension cord: Check for broken plugs and exposed wires.

Safety To prevent back injuries, heavy loads should be lifted with the legs.

Safety The best item of protective clothing for agricultural workers is coveralls.

Eye protection  Who should wear safety glasses???  EVERYONE!!!! Even Guests!!  Protection from:  Flying objects  Acids  Chemicals  Sparks

Eye protection  What type of safety glasses???  Z87

 Hearing damage may occur if exposed to noise above 90 decibels  Two things that combine to cause hearing damage are hours exposed and level of decibels  Flammable materials are kept in the flammable materials cabinet

Protective Clothing  Loose clothing, jewelry, and long hair can cause serious injuries by getting caught in machines/machinery  Safety policy is a plan  Safety procedure is an action

Other protective clothing  Aprons  Coveralls  Gloves  Shop coats  Boots/shoes  Hats/Hard hats  Respirators

Other protective clothing  Aprons  Protect the front of the body  Cloth, rubber, or leather  Store easily  Can be disposable  Should be secure against the body

Other protective clothing Coveralls Protect body, legs, arms Cotton Comfortable Pockets Covered zipper Elastic waist, button sleeves Small or no cuffs Flame resisistant

Other protective clothing Gloves Keep hands warm Protect from thorns, etc. Prevent blisters Hard hats Lightweight Impact resistant

Boots???

Boots?????

Other protective clothing Boots/shoes  Leather  Heat resistant  Comfort  Lightweight

Other protective clothing Respirators Cover your nose and mouth. Special filters to do specific jobs. Prevent lung diseases. Sanding, painting, welding

Other protective clothing Don’t be a shop slob – Describe a shop slob?

Don’t be a “shop slob”.

Clean up your messes To clean up oil spills

Before welding… what do these things have in common?

Fire Triangle If one part is missing, what happens?

Fire Triangle What is combustion?

Fire Extinguishers

Fires:Other ways to put out a fire  Wood/Paper:  Water  Baking soda  Soil  Fire Extinguisher

Fires:Other ways to put out a fire  What is the best way to put out a grease fire or other flammable liquid?  Water ??  Baking soda ??  Soil ??  Fire Extinguisher ??

Fires:Other ways to put out a fire  What is the best way to put out a grease fire or other flammable liquid?  Water NO  Baking soda YES  Soil YES  Fire Extinguisher YES, type B  Smother the fire with one of the above materials, water, will move it around

Hot metal… do NOT pick up with…. Why????

Hot metal… Vise Grips Pliers

Handling tools

Review  What types of safety equipment should you wear?  How should you work in the shop?  If you get hurt, what should you do?  If a tool gets broken, what should you do?  If you need to leave the Ag Mech area…?

Review  How should you clean up spills/why?  Hot metal should be handled with?  What is the fire triangle?  How should you communicate with people in the shop? talk? Shout? Listen/hear?

Good luck On the test!!!
