Computer Networks and Operating Systems Operating Systems Introduction

About me Craig Duffy Room 2p25 Best to I am teaching the operating systems stuff this year I specialise in embedded and mobile systems, mainly Linux based

Computing publicity from the 1940s

And from the 1950s

And something more recent...

So, what is an Operating System? In the early clips we say various people working on the computers These people were known as Operators They originally did a large number of the computer's tasks Some can be seen actually wiring up the computer for programs. Other might be doing the input or output The computer Operating System is basically doing their jobs!

The OS part of the course We are going to look, in detail, at how a computer OS works This will involve specifying what an OS is and isn't We will need to look in implementation details of operating systems We will also learn how to install, configure and program them

Why Linux? The system we will use is Linux. You may ask why? It is a good reference system We can compare with other systems It is free and open You might even get involved in its development It is solving the same problems as any other system It is based on UNIX, which has been a major influence on OS development

Resources #1 There are a number of books to read Course text Introduction to Operating Systems, John English, Palgrave Alternative Operating Systems with Linux, O'Gorman, Palgrave Loads of web resources The Linux Documentation Project is a good place to start Lots of web books and free pdfs.

Resources #2 There is a lot of material on the intranet Much of the material is still in Nigel Gunton's web pages cems.uwe.ac.uk/~ngunton → cnos link I will be putting more stuff on my web pages as the term progresses cems.uwe.ac.uk/~cduffy Also look on Ian Johnson's web pages cems.uwe.ac.uk/~irjohnso

Why attend? Hopefully the lectures will be interesting... The exam is based on the material presented in the lectures. Knowing about operating systems will help you with: Other course work Placement/career choice Final year project
