MARGARET THATCHER

EARLY LIFE -Born in 1952 in Grantham, England -Father was grocery store owner, and mayor -Mother was not very involved in her life -Was very involved in school and was very religious Thatcher and sister Muriel (left) -Grew up a Wesleyan Methodist and then later on passed those beliefs onto her own children -Always was very opinionated and head strong

SCHOOLING AND WORK - Huntingtower Road Primary School - Kesteven and Grantham Girls School, became Head Girl -Oxford -Degree in Chemistry -Moved to Essex to become a research chemist

 General elections for Labor Seat of Dratford; she was the only female and youngest candidate  She ended up losing to a man name Norman Dodds but she still managed to reduce labor majority by 6,000  Later that year she married Denis Thatcher and in 1953, with the help of Denis she qualified for barrister (specializing in taxation)  Gave birth to twins Mark and Carol Thatcher

CAREER  Defeated in 1954 for candidate for the Orphington election  Selected for candidate for Finchley in April of 1955  In October on 1961 she was given a job as Parliamentary Undersecretary in Harold Macmillan’s administration  1966 she moved to Treasury and fought labor laws  1967 she was invited by the US to visit the Embassy where she would visit with other political authorities and travel to many different US cities

CAREER  In 1970 due to Edward Heaths win for the Conservatives Thatcher was appointed for Secretary of State for Education and Science  “Margaret Thatcher, Milk Snatcher”  Rose the amount of children going to school from 32% to 62%

CAREER  Leader of Opposition in February of 1975  Had to receive many voice lessons due to her feminine voice and then gave a speech in Kensington Town Hall where she made an attack on the Soviet Union  The soviet responded with a speech where she was called the Iron Lady, to which she adapted easily  After a long political war fought about labor and another election happening, the Conservatives won a 44 seat majority and Margaret Thatcher became the UK’s first female Prime Minister.

PRIME MINISTER  While in office Thatcher met with the Queen weekly which stirred up the press and the nation, everyone thought something bigger was going on  Claims about a breach inbetween the Buckingham Palace and Downing Street over a wide range of domestic and international issues.  After being cleared and an official denial was sent out, all thoughts on the topic were dropped and no longer spoken of  Learning from past mistakes, Thatcher was very careful as to how she would phrase things while in office.

PRIME MINISTER  battled the countries recession by raising interest rates to help control the inflation  invasion of the Falkland islands  assassination attempt against her in 1984  education changes throughout the country but this was very unpopular because this would have disenfranchised the people who did not or could not pay it for these changes  Resigned in November

AFTER  Not long after leaving office, Thatcher was appointed to the House of Lords as Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven in 1992, and she wrote about her experiences as world leader and a pioneering woman in a couple books and she published a book called “Statecraft” where she offered her views on international policies.

DEATH  Margaret Thatcher’s health made headlines in 2010  She missed numerous events including her 85 th birthday party and Prince Williams wedding  Started having small strokes, memory loss and muscle inflammation  Margaret Thatcher died on April 8 th 2013 at the age of 87  She was survived by her two children Mark and Carol
