East Africa ‘Special Safari’ Jewel Safaris is based in Kampala, Uganda, midway between Kigali (Rwanda) and Nairobi (Kenya). Whether you are “On Safari” in the wildlife- stuffed savanna’s of the Serengeti and Ngorogoro Crater, experiencing firsthand the Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara or gorilla Trekking on the mist-covered hillsides of the Uganda/Rwanda border spending hours among a family of Mountain Gorillas, the staff of Jewel Safaris are the experts that will entertain, educate, inspire and amuse you.

MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE This is the most famous and most visited of the Wildlife Parks in Kenya; 270 kms from Nairobi (4-5 hours by road). Here in Maasai Mara one can find large numbers of Maasai Lions, African Leopards and Tanzanian Cheetahs; the biggest spectacle in East Africa also takes place here….the Wildebeest Migration to and from the Serengeti (Tanzania) from July to October. Maasai Mara is located in the Southwest of Kenya, combined with the Serengeti is the most spectacular game-viewing eco-systems in the world. The Reserve stretches 1,510 square kilometers. Here there are over 95 species of mammals and almost 600 species of birds.

LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK Lake Nakuru is a soda lake, just south of the town of Nakuru, protected by the Lake Nakuru National Park. The abundance of algae, created by the flamingo droppings, in turn, attracts the literally millions of flamingos that line the shore. In addition, other attracted species are exotic mammals such as the 30 Eastern Black Rhinos, 70 White Rhinos, giraffe and baboons. The Park also has many Maasai Lions, African Cheetahs and Tanzanian Leopards. Photographs of the flamingos on Lake Nakuru are world famous. It is truly an amazing site, overwhelming the first time.

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK Serengeti National Park occupies 14,763 square kilometers; 15% of the total land mass of Tanzania. The Serengeti is the oldest and most popular National Park in both Tanzania and East Africa. The most famous feature of the Park is the annual Wildebeest Migration; some 1.5 million Wildebeest, in a 40 kilometer long column plunge through crocodile-infested waters in the act of repleneshing the specie; over 8,000 calves daily are produced before the 1,000 kilometer pilgrimage begins again. Accompanying the Wildebeest on this exodus from the Serengeti to the Kenyan Maasai Mara, are 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson’s Gazelle, in their common search for fresh grazing. As if this was not enough of a draw, the Serengeti is also the most scintillating game-viewing location in Africa. Great herds of buffalo, elephant and giraffe, as well as thousands upon thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant’s gazelle, live within its boundaries. The predator cats are also in huge numbers; leopards, cheetahs, and Lions are easily spotted. The ecosystem is also home to lizards, hyraxes, over 100 varieties of dung beetle, plus 500-plus bird species. Despite its popularity, one can go on a Game Drive and never spot another human for many hours; the part is enormous.

NGORONGORO CRATER The Ngorongoro Crater was formed by a large vocano exploding and collapsing into itself; the crater is 610 meters deep and its floor covers 260 square meters. Here in the Ngorongoro Crater, wildlife and humans co-exist; the only conservation area in Tanzania where this has been permitted. Cultivation is limited to a subsistence level, to protect the wildlife’s ecosystem. Over 25,000 large animals live in the crater; including black rhino, Cape buffalo, hippos, blue wildebeest, Grant’s zebra, eland, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles, waterbucks, Tanzanian cheetah, East African wild dog and African leopard. It also has the densest known population of Maasai Lions.
